DStv-Samsung Android app exclusivity ending in 2015

Yah maybe now they can release this for every other Android and where is catchup?

Why is it my problem that Apple charges DSTV more to sell the same goods?

Does that erode my right to the same content, based on your issue with Apple taking 30% of the top line?

I think not

I don't get their thinking either, they've excluded iOS off the bat... 70% of something is better than 100% of nothing.

I suppose the amount of iOS users is South Africa is small enough for them to ignore.

So they don't want to release on iOS because Apple keeps 30%? Greedy morons. So they would rather throw away 70% income than give Apple (who has to host the app, manage update for users, etc) 30%. Typical DSTV.

This is because of the commission Apple charges on anything sold within iOS applications.
“To give away 30% of your top line is massive,” Kotsaftis said.

In-app purchases.. yea, Apple went on a clamp down as often places did their own accounting and didn't use Apple processing. I'm wondering if the rejection was purely on the margin loss (30%) or was a proper study about Apple user demographics, paying for services VS market reach & sales done? if not they being dumb.. everyone knows a greater % of iOS users pay for services & software.

I'd consider using it if it showed closer to cinema releases(pre-rental release) if sold as a stand alone service.. but i use Apple products so tough luck.

Question should be : why are they charging for the app? Netflix, Amazon etc, are all free on Apple Store

You did not read the earlier posts did you? Somebody already mentioned that you get charged for the in-app purchases. So if you rent a movie for R30, Apple keeps 30%. The app in itself is free. The same with Netflix: you get the app for free but you pay a monthly fee for the contents.

I pay for Amazon as well. Direct to Amazon. Not via iTunes. I access Amazon via XBox on my TV and on my iPad. Apple aren't paid. Same goes for Netflix. I can watch Netflix on my Xbox if I want to watch it on the tv. Doesn't have to be in app purchases

No share of my monthly fee goes to Apple

Your monthly fees by amazon are independent provided you're not subscribed through iTunes.

If you subscribe to Netflix through iTunes then Apple gets 30% of the subscription, similarly, if you purchase a magazine through Newsstand Apple gets 30%, (edit) physical goods and services are not subject to the 30% payment.

So, if you rent a movie via the BoxOffice app on iOS then Apple would get 30%... AppStore terms and conditions state that your app would be removed if you bypass IAP rules.

That's kind of massive yes, but I didn't think Monochoice knows expensive seeing how much they charge us already

I don't think I can subscribe to Amazon or Netflix through iTunes. There is no in-app purchase options in my iPad netflix or Amazon app. Amazon Kindle works the same way. You can't buy books directly through the Kindle app. You can buy them through Safari on your iPad and then open it in the Kindle app. I watch UK Channel 4 and ITV the same way. Free app, zero charge to Apple. Why are multi choice unable to offer their customers similar services without paying Apple commission?

I subscribe to Netflix through my US iTunes account. Wouldn't know about the Amazon subscription though as I don't use their services.

If MultiChoice were to have me rent a movie on another device in order to consume it on the iPad or iPhone then I may as well just watch it on the device I'm using to rent it.

Still on the same device. I can rent from Amazon via the web on my iPad for the shows that aren't available through Amazon Prime.

My point is, that multi choice can offer streaming to iOS users without paying the 30% to Apple. Amazon do it. You don't have to change devices. Just order the movie from the web on the same device. Friend of mine does it on the web from his tv.

They only reason they wouldn't be able to do this is because they are unable to integrate their app with their web store ?
