DStv smartcard replacement confusion

I get that warm and fuzzy feeling every time I read something like this. It is so good to be TV free since the start of the year.

All we have here is a small XBMC PC and 51" Plasma...
I'm thinking I should just do this too. The wife and I realised a while ago neither of us really give a damn what's on TV, since we also have an XBMC setup. We decided to move to TopTV, so our 3-year-old can watch the kids stuff if she wants, but really she doesn't care for TV much either. Last week we noticed that the TopTV decoder was unplugged, and I realised I had actually unplugged it about 3 weeks prior, that's how important TV is to us. :wtf:

We downgraded to Select2 sometime last year because we both watched Binnelanders. The decoder was pretty much locked to 111 and then we realised that we were paying close to R10 for a few minutes of TV each day. Add to that the hassle of having to record the episodes and fast forwarding over ads... Much better to cancel it. Now we spend less time in front of the TV and we only watch stuff we want to see.

I'll consider multichoice again if they someday have true VOD. Where I buy a certain amount of minutes and I can stream whatever content I want until my minutes are depleted.

I changed my smartcard not because I was notified to do so, but because it was suggested it was causing the problems I constantly experienced getting the decoder to 'validate' our account when rebooting (I have to reboot daily because our home is solar-powered and stuff cannot be left wastefully on standby. In any case, Standby is an environmental crime).

The bad news was that it didn't fix the problem. And my 'love' for DSTV was not improved when I went to replace my trusty DVD Recorder only to be told that DSTV was reported as having persuaded the government to ban them, which is why DVD recorders and independent PVRs are no longer on the market in SA. Grrrrrrr.....

Wow, this is completely not on! Does anyone know who we can shout at about this? I'm not even in the market for one of these things, but that's beside the point. If they've really done this, its beyond disgusting!

Oh, is that why you could no longer but HDD and DVD recorders. I had an LG 320GB what I used for a long time and when I wanted to buy something new I could not find any thing. Well it contributed to me cancelling DSTv and now I torrent everything.
