Hi guys, i am moving into a new place and will need to install dstv, so i would like to get an idea of the installation costs involved.

Going the HD route.

HD PVR 2 - R1800
Dish with twin LNB - R??
Installation - R?? (Im renting a duplex so would prob need to get the prof to do the installation as its not my own place and can't try my own DIY installation tactics.)

Is there any suggestions on where is the best place to go for a quote on the setup including dish, LNB, installation etc. I am situated in Melkbosstrand, Cape Town.

Also on the subscription side. Premium subscription will be like R595 for HD, is there any connection fees or "startup" fees or paying for the smartcard when taking out a new subscription?

Further more - I see Makro is having a special on the normal dstv package for R599 or something including an installation voucher..i pressume you will still need to buy the actual dish then.

Thanks in advance.

There are no other fees on DStv's side. The install voucher from Makro includes the dish, LNB and install.

You could get the special at R599 & then use the 1131 decoder for Xtraview. You would need the installer to use a twin LNB + multiswitch or a SatCR instead of a single LNB though, and run an extra cable

Twin LNB R300
2x4 multiswitch R300
SatCR R800
Cabling about R3/m

Would probably be cheaper to buy these yourself to avoid the installers markup

Just don't use Aerea-Sat! Call Multichoice and ask them for a list of accredited installers for your area, or ask a neighbour.

A new smartcard is R120. Then there's the R529 monthly subscription plus R65 HD/PVR access fee which adds up to R594 per month.

Although you'll probably get a free smartcard bundled together with the decoder & dish.

That is a single LNB dish and decoder. You could get an installed HD PVR with dish for about R1999

Thanks for the response guys. So it looks like HD route will set me back +- R2600 for decoder, dish + installation while normal dstv will be R600..quite a difference there.

Look for an installer starting up and not the electronic stores as they are expensive.
I found one on bidorbuy who did an install for R700 incl dish for JHB area (awhile back, normal costs then were R1000).
When i moved, i phoned a store and they charged me R700 to install - no dish.
Then found a guy thro Toptv install (word of mouth).
When i went back to DSTv, did the HD thing and he charged me R1400 that excludes the dish but included lnb, multiswitch as well as additional point in bedroom.

Point is there are guys there that will do it, just need to look closer.
Dont know anyone in CPT.

Wait a min, u included decoder in yr price. That does not sound right.
Over 2k normal charge for installation for everything EXCl. decoder.

R2k for installation excl the decoder is a huge ripoff, the installer will pay max R250 dish, R300 dual LNB, R200 cabling > R750
Hence R750 equipment + R1800 decoder, so some installers are charging around R2800, not a great margin but business is business

U never add labour.

I was also adding to the cost additional point.
Which means add 2x4 switch - R300, plus R200 cabling.

Don't use Aerea Sat, was just in there yesterday for a price on an upgrade with my current pvr set up and they quoted me R3700 including the decoder.
Seemed a bit ridiculous to me as the chick didn't even know what i was talking about. Sorry for hijacking your thread but a quick question:
If I already have a dual view pvr set up, would it be simpler to buy the new hd pvr decoder, a multi-switch and install it myself? yes I was quoted R3700 for that.

Yip. DIY is possible.

Great, cos having to pay that much money for someone else to unscrew cables and screw them in again is ridiculous when I know I can do it myself.
