DSTV versus ODM, Telkom Media

I really hope Koos Bekker is not correct here, but I think it will be difficult for a new entrant to compete with MultiChoice/DSTV. The fact that not a single new pay-TV provider launched commercial services - despite the fact that they all said mid to late 2008 - gives an indication that it is easier said than done.

What will its value proposition be? Will it get access to all the sport?
 
I don't care about sport. Just let me choose my channels.
 
Chatted the other day to someone who was working on the Telkom Media project couple of years back. Seems that everything was up and running, and the business model developed for them and in place. The only thing remaining was to sign the deal so that they could go commercial. At this stage political-type interference occured and the existing projects was shut down because the colour of the parties involved was not right enough. There was actually some mentioning off blunt racism as well, the hatred of whites. Wonder how many other times the broader South Africa would have been advantaged and then spearheaded by a small group with there own ideas.
 
last time i checked the ODM website they stated there lunch date as last half of 2009 and not second quarter any more :(
 
I reckon ODM will suck. No marketing, website down 24/7, no one know who are what they about and they should be launching now. Ill stick to dstv.

Their website also seems to be down for maintenance A LOT. Wonder what is happening, surely you don't take down you website while creating a replacement, you develop offline, and then switch after the replacement is ready.
 
he's not lying - there were other satalite TV services in SA, but they generally sucked.
 
Gents,there's a huge amount of red tape around broadcasting and encryption....we have been in the market a while and understand the pressures for these companies trying to make the commerical model work for them...we can only hope!

Whatever happened to that AstraSat (?) 'aternative'.

I'm not sure I have the name right, but I seem to recall some family of mine had a dish and some other channels (that were less than impressive at the time).
 
How about action to show DSTV consumers dissatisfaction.

Lets proclaim month where large number of DSTV subscribers will embark on a STRIKE against MonoChoice and discontinue their subscription for a month?!

This would surely curb Koosies arrogance!!!!!

STOP talking rubbish, the closing down of telkom media had nothing to do with colour nor did it have anything to do with political interference.....a white dude from Telkom media was explaining on 702 business slot as to why Telkom media had to close down....it all has to do with money and how profitable the intire project was going to be!

It would be interesting to see the up- and down-sides of this if some of the more astute reporters in SA's National Press had to dig into this.
 
Bekker was quoted by Fin24 as saying that "the competition is unlikely to mean much. Multichoice has always competed against a variety of products".

Afaik, The only Naspers company competing against others are Mweb and they are pretty expensive compared to other isp's.
