DStv vs Canal+ — Packages and pricing compared

Where DStv focuses on sports, local content, and a selection of international blockbusters, Canal+ subscriptions aggregate a handful of channels with various streaming providers.

Groupe Canal+ is a French media conglomerate that is in the midst of an offer to buy MultiChoice. It has offered R125 per share, which values the company at over R55 billion and will cost over R30 billion cash.
 
Oops all those comrades that got the #dstvmustfall bandwagon. Seems it blew up in their socialist faces.
 
Remember how COSATU jumped up and down because Walmart was taking over Massmart?
Remember how they raged that Walmart would flood their stores with cheap products and close local business?
Remember how nothing changed?

More recently how people were waiting for a local Amazon to come in and shake the place up and nothing changed.

Can't compare an overseas service with a local service. There is nothing to say Canal has major plans to fix any of the issues at DStv and will just carry on fleecing their customer base. They need to overhaul the packages and introduce a new Explora that can last longer, than after unpacking the device. All expensive issues and they will be looking at cost vs profit ratio.

In other DStv posts, other people reckoned Canal is going to use DStv as a starting point to get into Africa and I think they onto something with that.
 
The "Number of channels" metric is meaningless as it does not necessarily relate to "the latest and greatest" content. Compact Plus has "115+" channels, and Premium has "135+" channels. But Compact Plus doesn't have 85% of "the latest and greatest" content (which is typically reserved for and broadcast on MNET).

It is quite possible for a service with 10 channels to have better content than one with 100+ channels if they have the right content and less repeats.

MC are feeding you BS.
These days DStv only shows any blockbusters on their movie channels long after they could have. If you want those earlier from them then you pay extra for their Box Office option now - minimum of R40 per modern movie.


Edit: There's a few series shown early that I suppose one could also categorise as blockbusters, but anyway it's very seldom.
Only recent one I know of is House of the Dragon S02, but that's on cheap Showmax as well..
(And some woke stuff of course.)

The economy as a majority wouldn't afford the high rates for such luxury I mean there's a reason NBCUniversal and Warner Bros. Discovery opted to rather license their content to DStv as opposed to launching their streaming services - money.

They did say consumers shouldn't expect a sports package if anything Canal+ has FilmBox, Toonami and TravelXP perhaps those will surface on DStv but at the expense of other channels as they'd want to reduce costs seeing as it is a merger

Based on MultiChoice's current performance, I'm expecting them to cutback on channels seeing as they'll be the new owners they'll prioritize whatever is on their platforms which again is nothing much but I'm not expecting this to happen right away as there's agreements in place.

There's a reason a majority are fearful as Canal+ would have a 20% obligation to SABC News due to local legislation and that BEE partner would have 80% and could as well look to reduce channels. Basically, Canal+ will be whatever MultiChoice Africa is at the moment their BEE partner would manage 80% of MultiChoice SA.
