DStv vs Online streaming

DStv holds a monopoly on paid satellite TV services in South Africa, with its competition unable to compete with its extensive range of channels and sports broadcasting rights.

However, the rise of online streaming services coupled with ever-reducing Internet prices means that DStv now has significant competition in the video content market.

what a dumb article, firstly, dstv charge me R904/month and not R809, also showmax is included with premium afaik so they shouldn't add the cost of that either, or are did they sneak in showmax into my subscription?

Poor comparison as usual. Would have the fibre connection for work and gaming whether I used streaming or not. Shouldn't be included...

Yeah pretty pointless comparison might as well include the price of a TV, home theatre and electricity as well.

Netflix also has an app for phones, maybe include the price of a cell contract as well, will make DSTV seem much cheaper then.

I use internet for so many other things as well apart from only streaming tv. How can this be a fair comparison?
It's not supposed to be.

All I read was that if you already have an Internet connection, you will be ripped off if you pay for DSTV too

Monochoice is a rip-off in S.A. Why do you have to pay for channels you don't watch? They reduce prices in all of Africa except S.A where they rip off customers and now crying like babies because Netflix giving them competition

NetFlix, Amazon Prime TV, Apple TV +, Disney TV streaming service, all the European streaming services, not to mention the big American movie houses that will join the fray in the next year or so - DSTV are small fry, and the sharks are gathering ... , and DSTV are running sacred.

What a stupid comparison! Seriously?! You cannot add the cost of an ISP/internet to the comparison. Most need/use some sort of internet suite regardless of what their viewing requirements are.

I have Dstv (expires on Sunday) + fibre + ISP. Cutting Dstv is a massive saving when I use Netflix (and ESPN+& CBS). No comparison at all.

How much in bed with Govt is Multichoice?

For example if another streaming service wants to give us access like Disney or CBS for example, would they be blocked because of Multichoice Govt contracts and cronies is the market open for anyone?

 Netflix is arguably DSTVs biggest threat, judging by the sensationalised article titles, and they weren't blocked.

Most people don't. Also you'll be surprised how many people will answer that if it wasn't for Netflix or similar they'll cancel or downgrade their fibre for something cheaper. Funny how people now justify overpaying for fibre because they consider Netflix as providing the value. Yeah not a fair comparison as each streaming service only gives you a fraction of the shows so you also need more than one and at the end of the day people choose what makes the most sense for them.

How many times a year does MyBB rehash this exact same story?

You're on the wrong boat, that is a contract issue between MC and the content rights holders. So MC can then for example take CBS to court if CBS breached their contract by giving South African rights to someone else, or MC will take the someone else to court (and moan with CBS) if that someone else is providing the content in South Africa without the permission of CBS to do so.

No government involvement in this one (except ruining running the court system).
