Hey Guys,

I would like an honest opinion pls, from someone who had both services already. DStv is now ridiculously expensive, and with all the adverts its showing in between shows its simply not worth the fee anymore.

I was wondering what is your opinion on Toptv, is it crap or worth the move? How is the service? Is the quality similar then Dstv?

I believe their is threads like these already, however they are old and things changed with Toptv.

If the largest reason you have DSTV is to watch sports, then no it won't help switching. If you simple have DSTV because SABC is crap, then Top TV might be ok. Of course the faster people switch over the larger presence TTV become and the quicker they might be able to have sports etc.

Only get TOPTV, if you HATE watching TV.

If you get TOPTV and you are trying to find something to watch for say, 3 minutes, you will be disappointed.

You'll have enough to watch for a month or two, then you'll start seeing the repeats (although the Top Movies channel seems to be getting better now, with more new movies). I imagine things will get better after about three months as the Nielson ratings will finally arrive and they'll know when no one is watching.

I was wondering if it would be worth me taking the TopTV package for R159 a month while keeping the DSTV Compact (R232). That would add up to R391 which would be R138 cheaper than the DSTV Premium package of R529 (I dont watch sport on TV so dont need Supersport).
Would be interested if anyone thinks that there would be viewing value in that!?

Greggle, I would rather pay the R138 extra for DStv Premium.

I had TTV for 6months and have now moved to DStv Premium. Funny enough, if it wasn't for TTV, I wouldn't have got DStv...
TTV just provided me with poor service. I also had the signal loss issue.... They didn't try and resolve it... So I canceled... That let to another fight.

R168 cheaper at the new subs of R559

I had toptv for about 9 months, after 1st month I switched down to the R99 package. and I have been on DSTV the last month.

Toptv
Cheaper than DSTV. wouldn't pay more than the R99 package, includes some sport, some movies. Way better than just having SABC and ETV.
signal quality is bad is watching on 42" or bigger screen.
Movies terrible, no proper sport

DSTV HD
expensive
HD is awesome, watch the 4 HD Channels 80% of the time.
Sport and Movies are quite good.

If you want live sport, give top tv a miss.

I'm a gamer and actually don't like sport at all. If girls in sexy sweaters played rugby I would be into that sort of thing. But atm, my its mostly wife that loves the tv at times, she does watch high profile series like Desperate House Wifes etc... so I guess that wont be on top tv either?

What about the channels like Discovery Science, Travel and Living, Natura? Are they any good?

Have had toptv for a while now (almost a year), Disagree about signal, Mine is perfect on my 42" LCD and the picture quality is stunning (Close to DVD quality).

The repeats can get a little annoying if you plan to watch 3 hours+ of tv a day, Week nights we are always entertained when we watch it (from the discovery channels to the fox channels), weekends not so much in the day time but ok for at night. The kids channels seem to be fun for our daughter as well.

I am happy to hear that people tend to like TopTv... your answers helped allot, thanks guys.

In other forums I've read it seems that many people have differing opinions on TopTV. Some love it, others hate it. I think that you have to decide what interests you and then give it a try ... I'm gonna wait to see what channels they add and then will probably go for it!

As soon as TopTV can buy rights to cricket, soccer, rugby and F1 then I will switch immediately. This whole "exclusive rights" thing is BS and an impediment to competition.

If you like music and documentaries, then there is nothing wrong with TopTV, you can get music, documentaries and the basic channels for R189pm, a bargain.
Just make sure the installer uses the proper size dish, must be at least 80cm, I have seen a few installers try save a buck by installing 60cm dishes.
