DStv's pricing problem

The problem with DSTV and other large corporations like it, are that as soon as the numbers start to show pressure, they change the metrics to keep the shareholders "confused". They used to measure only premium as premium, then started reporting on subscriber numbers differently, then introduced compact plus as a "premium" service to boost the numbers, then included the 39 rand a month service as part of subscriber numbers .. etc ...

Just like Telkoms fixed line / ADSL numbers back in the day .. accountants doing accountant things, instead of dealing with the real issue, that DSTV has been circling the drain for about 8 years, and they have no brand loyalty left .. in fact ... I would say its the opposite .. people are hoping it will fail, because it deserves to, and people want to see a new more appropriate service rise in its place.

Obviously I feel for the people who will / would be affected by DSTV's demise, but I get great pleasure in seeing the mighty / arrogant fall... If they had shown a bit more sensitivity as a brand over the last decade, it would be a different story .. but they bled every drop from the south african public for as long as it could last...
Yes. Classic Koos B.

Don't know why people pay to watch repeats and adds and outdated content. There is much better alternatives out there.
Rugby. Which can be quickly unbundled by the govt but, it's SA.
Incompetence? Corruption? Who knows...

DSTV increasing prices is about as common as yet another article on them, or the tide coming in and going out daily, or the sun rising. It's a given.

The Ironic thing is... if they slashed their prices to R300 a month for the premium package and made it a single tier option with sports, they would sign up like 24 million subscribers....

But greed is clouding their thinking.
You would assume greed, but that isn't entirely the full picture here. They do have to buy content to air, and that is priced in dollars, syndication costs around 400 - 600 thousand dollars an episode. Let that sink in for a moment. On average 11 076 000 per episode especially if it's a popular show. Whether or not countries outside of the US pay different rates for syndication, I don't know. Given the estimated costs in the US, you can bet your bottom dollar studios and tv networks are getting their pound of flesh from DSTV.

Not that I am defending DSTV, just to be clear, but just to point out syndication ain't cheap, just some thing to keep in mind before making accusations of "greed" being the main drive.

Many years ago I worked for a client who was a senior person in the technical division at DSTV MNET.

I asked him, as he was leaving for work, why they only sell set menus (bouquets), why they don't offer a menu like a restaurant, but have a base price of say R40 then have a price per channel.

That afternoon we were finishing up and he returned home and said "BTW, we had a chat at lunch time about your question, there is absolutely no reason we can't do it, but the marketing guys don't want to."

You could offer it to me for free I would never sign any contract with this company, they dont seem to get it, they have out priced themselves , I remember when I cancelled probably 15 years ago, they asked why I said its a complete rip off for what you get. They clearly didnt take that into account and continued to milk the SA public.
They will now learn the hard way
Sport isant that important in my life to pay almost a grand a month
