DStv slashes decoder prices

MultiChoice's DStv has reduced the price of its Model 10S HD Single View decoder from R699 to R299, excluding installation, and from R1,299 to R699 with installation.

This forms part of the broadcaster's Thol-iUpsize promotion, which also enables decoder customers on lower-end packages to upgrade to higher-end packages at no charge.

I might just get one. With the Rugby World Cup in 2027, having this as a backup in case streaming goes down might not be a bad idea.

Some years ago I would have laughed at this but now I'm really bored of streaming and all the 'woke' nonsense. It's been a long time since I actually enjoyed something on Netflix, Prime Video is mostly really old content, Apple TV is too expensive and Disney Plus is the wokest of them all.

So that only leaves Showmax which is good but they hype too much reality nonsense. Maybe DSTV is not such a bad idea if you mostly watch sports and African content.

It's going to snow....

You are delusional if you think there are no woke nonsense on DSTV.

That too.
I would go so far as suggesting that most new series and movies they've been offering appeared woke.

Still too soon to judge re Multicanal though.

From what I hear DStv "upgrade" their decoders about once a year and you have to buy a new one. The chances that one you buy now will become e-waste before the World Cup is quite good.

Why the decoders can't get an OTA "upgrade is beyond me!

False.

I still use one decoder type that was launched around 2003, works well enough.

But yes, they discourage using older units.

Yep that too, but was talking about the older-still DualView :giggle:

Crikey, how well does it still work? I had an 1131 at an AirBnB earlier this year, it felt antiquated. Honestly surprised MC still persists with SD broadcasts, I'm pretty sure the BBC has discontinued them in the UK.

Not bad, just slow. Fortunately my eyesight doesn't care about SD anymore.
it's the later SD PVR that became near-useless without quite a fiddle. More memory involved.

I think there's a don't-buy-newer culture here among the masses. Was the same story with digital terrestrial TV adoption failure I imagine

I haven't been following MC for years. Does the PVR pick up those high band transponders or are they reserved for HD channels?
Seriously considering giving MC the middle finger once the rugby is done for the year.

Yeah, most HD is more modern format on their own type of transponder. There's a couple they all share though

A few saying that. In my case it's free access they failed to deactivate so..

I had a colleague whose parents never switched from the mnet decoder to dstv, who still paid under R400 (this was around 2014, when we worked together, he got to watch all the rugby games live. He would connect it to a projector and watch the games on his "big screen".
