DStv slashes decoder prices

MultiChoice’s DStv has reduced the price of its Model 10S HD Single View decoder from R699 to R299, excluding installation, and from R1,299 to R699 with installation.

This forms part of the broadcaster’s Thol-iUpsize promotion, which also enables decoder customers on lower-end packages to upgrade to higher-end packages at no charge.

While not explicitly mentioned in the promotion’s announcement, DStv has also quietly cut the cost of its HD Single View decoder.

The hardware typically costs R699, excluding installation, and R1,299 with installation. However, until 31 December 2025, customers can get the decoder for R299, and for R699 with installation.

“Get your DStv HD decoder for just R299, our way of saying thank you for 30 amazing years,” the broadcaster’s website reads.

DStv recently ran an Open Time promotion over the weekend of 8 and 9 November 2025, enabling subscribers paying as little as R139 per month to access the R799-per-month Premium bouquet.

Immediately after the Open Time weekend, DStv announced its Thol-iUpsize promotion, which provides decoder customers on lower-tier packages free upgrades to higher tiers until 31 December 2025.

Access and Family customers have been upgraded to the Compact package, while Compact and Compact Plus customers can access the DStv Premium bouquet.

However, subscribers on the highest-tier, Premium, package haven’t been left out. These customers get access to up to four concurrent streams until 31 December 2025.

At the same time, DStv will offer its streaming customers additional rewards during the promotional period.

The broadcaster has also relaunched its online store with the intention of making it easier for customers to buy its products and have them delivered to their doorstep.

French media giant Groupe Canal+ recently completed its acquisition of DStv owner MultiChoice, and according to Canal+ Africa CEO David Mignot, South Africans have a lot to look forward to.

Combining Canal+ and MultiChoice’s content catalogues

David Mignot, Canal+ Africa CEO

In August 2025, Mignot said MultiChoice customers in South Africa can expect a slew of new content to arrive on its platforms following Canal+’s takeover of the company.

He explained that Canal+ has the largest library of European content, including thousands of movies and series, and added that customers should expect the two companies to combine their catalogues.

“MultiChoice content is incredible. We will have the ability to use the strengths of the two groups,” said Mignot.

“So customers can expect all that is available at Canal+. We have the biggest library of European content, including a lot of American content … like 9,000 movies.”

He also explained that Canal+ produces large amounts of local content, with 4,000 hours of African content in up to 15 languages created each year.

He said MultiChoice customers would get access to this content, in addition to the 6,000 hours of local content the South African broadcaster produces annually.

“Combined, we will roughly provide 10,000 hours per year in 20 to 35 languages,” said Mignot.

“So, in a 10- to 15-year period, we are building up a catalogue of more than 100,000 to 150,000 hours, and then we will be able to make that content travel.”

While Canal+ has yet to announce any new channels to be added to MultiChoice’s platforms, it has already started introducing new content on existing channels.

In mid-October 2025, DStv added French Ligue 1 football matches, broadcast live, to the SuperSport lineup.

This was the first major new content launched on DStv since Groupe Canal+ gained control of the MultiChoice Group on Monday, 22 September 2025.
