DStv's war on Internet piracy

Waka TV is still going though? I was literally introduced to it last week at someone's else - remember discussing how an apparent "pirate" app has a better, more reliable interface and EPG than DSTV.

MonoChoice style you see... they honestly are still stuck in 1987... they still think SA is the way it was back then, when everyone would cower in fear when a company or the government opened its mouth to tell the volk they better do something.

They still think and believe they can prosecute you for trying to hack your DSTV decoder, and by that I mean, any part of it, even removing a capacitor to fix something else. God help you if you dump the flash memory to a hex listing. Then you're going to get some time in the naughty corner. Fortunately the courts have declared that once you've bought something it's your property and you can destroy as you please.

3-4 years ago, I had a service that would put DSTV to shame, they where so professional. They had excellent support 24/7, 7 days a week. There where no issues with the service. If you reported an issue with a channel, it was promptly fixed. Admittedly I was paying $20 a month for it. Then it just disappeared. Fortunately those of us, who where using it, did not get taken.


Now if they could do that, then DSTV has no leg to stand on with their crap service levels.

It's only the resellers that gets nabbed. Plus this waka operation is not limited to SA. I've seen it in Kenya, Nigeria and most probably throughout Africa.

I bought a cheap tvbox for someone 2 months ago and it came with the waka app. So i decided to check it out in the 7 day trial. I can see why someone would want to pay R160/month for it. It was quick and responsive and channels load fast, even on the cheap box. I even tested it on a 5mbps throttled AP i have for the gardener and other workers, and it worked perfectly with a decent to good picture quality.

I removed it and load my own jellyfin server for him for free.
 
Have they been able to do more than arrest a few low level people selling android boxes though?

If authorities in the US and Europe, despite their global reach and infinite resources, haven't been able to shut down these services I have very little faith that SAPS will be very effective considering most of these services are operated and ran in foreign countries.

The website where I get your pirate streams, for free (bar stripper ads), have upgraded to offer it in FHD!

Saw with commentary on the article that Saffas in Australia use WakaTV to watch SuperSport etc.

I seem to recall that at one stage one could watch KyKNet overseas, but DStv did away with that option.

Last week I received a call from MultiChoice, asking if I'm interested in a DSTv decoder.

My response: "Why must I pay for something that I can get free?"

I could almost hear her fall off her chair: "How??" - or was it "Hau?"

Me: "Haven't you heard of YouTube? I can watch what I want, when I want to"

Her: "Oh, but you could watch all the sport"

Me: "Sport? LOL. No, thank you. Still not interested! Goodbye!"
 
Seems DStv disrupted WakaTV a bit here and there.

I'd say its more the crackdown in Europe and the US. There were a few big operations the last few months shutting down IPTV syndicates.
