Dual citizenship

Those are naturalised citizines, I'm talking about SA born people that qualify for some other countries becuase some grandmother of theirs was a citizen there, or their parents are from there.

Why in Gods name would a person give up a British Passport for an SA passport? haha I prefer to have Britain backing me up thanks. Even if I was born here, my blood is British and I deserve that choice. Sounds like jealousy to me

Short answer No. British and South African law permits the holding of dual citizenship. The rules are as follows: as long as you exit and enter SA on your ZA passport that is the only requirement.
You also forfiet any assistance from the ZA high commission in the UK if you enter the UK on your UK passport and the same for ZA (don't expect the UK High Commission to rescue you if the ZA police arrest you.
Oh yes and if you get called up to the ZA armed forces (if they decided to re-introduce conscription) then you wouldn't be exempt because of you UK citizenship.

There are other countries that do not permit dual nationality but for now you don't have to worry about having to give up either nationality.

I have both and it is the most useful thing to have.

cool, thats awesome! Someone told me that I have to apply for like retention or something, to make sure i dont lose my south african passport/citezenship.

IMO, people should only have one citizenship. If you are South African, then you should be fully committed to SA, not have a Lesotho, or European passport.

Jealousy makes you nasty! :p

I have dual citizenship.....

BUT I have no intention of leaving this country... it is my home and it is where I belong.

Me too. I have on intention of leaving. Makes it so much easier when travelling. No need for visas.

Damit why all the S.A fetish suffers got dual citzenships

God truly has a sick sense of humor :D

That he does... and I have an even sicker one..... its great landing in London on holiday and walking through all the bull**** cos I'm a citizen while all the ppl moving there have to go thru checks and blah blah blah... its luverly :D

Even if the countries don't allow dual citizenship, the chance of anyone actually checking it with our favorite government is small. Just imagine going to Home Affairs and asking them for copies of a 100 000 passports pls.:D

As long as one is discrete and uses the appropriate passport at the borders, then it should never be a problem.

A few years ago one still needed to get a document every year. But the ZA gov announced about 2 years ago that it is cool as long as you don't use the foreign passport within SA borders.

Not necessarily. In many countries with conscription, they will give you a pass if you have dual citizenship. They prefer people who have clear allegiance to one country.

Just upsets me thats all, anyone here in such a situation? And could you enlighten us why you choose to keep both passports?

Having dual citizenship makes perfect sense. You have SA citizenship so you can live and work as you please. But is you also hold a british passport it means you can travel to most places in the world without needing to get a visa, not to mention you can live and work in the EU.

Do I have sour grapes? Sort of, there is a thread in the NCA section regarding if white people should classify themselves as africans, and the overwhelming response was yes. So why do you need the foreign passports if you are african? Does it not sound weird to you?

PS, I'm not saying all white people hold dual citizenship, my beef is with those that do. They must pick already, and I would have no issue with the seeing themselves as african.

Why should they have to pick? At the rate SA is circling the drain, holding another passport at least provides a good excape route.

B0l10cks to that.

In an ideal world, we shouldn't even require passports - it's become a neccessary evil due to petty bureaucracy over decades.

We should all first and foremost be citizens of the world.
It's the erection of artificial borders that's got humanity in more trouble than it's worth and what are passports other than border control?

Ballocks I say, get rid of borders, get rid of passports and give peas a chance! ... erm, or something like that ... :D

Yes, what bb_matt said, Mugabe should be free to roam where he pleases while he runs his reign of terror against his subjects!
NOT

I left SA because on the Nats but came back thinking things had changed with the ANC, but its worse , so why should I get a South African passport. The Government has sertianly fulfilled its pledge , we are now a 3rd World country in the eyes of the rest of the world and will soon be Zimbabwe2. Any other country would suspend people with criminal tendancies ,especialy when they have their hand in the cookie jar or are convicted fellons.

SA Passports are now worth so little thanks to the fact that you can get them so easily. Hence UK is going to now require visas for south africans.

If the British are happy to offer dual citizenship, which should SA not? Or are we holding our citizens hostage? Jon Qwelane can call me a "twee-gat jakkal" for all I care.

Well, if there were no borders, what exactly will Mugabe be running a reign of terror of?

Why need borders and passports at all?
If people were free (citizens of the world)we could go where we please and work and live where we please.

Why should the movement of people be restricted?

Restriction of movement of people is a modern thing. It never used to influence humans before.
