DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Fire broke out Thursday in a residential building near Dubai's massive New Year's Eve fireworks display.
It was not immediately clear what caused the fire, which ran up at least 20 stories of the building near the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper at 828 meters (905 yards).
Burning debris rained down from the building as firetrucks raced to the scene. It was not immediately clear if anyone was wounded in the blaze.

"Dubai - taking it to the limit"

Watching CNN and reports from 'Witness's" of sudden and quick start of fire with funny noise beforehand, this does not sound good. Is this a "fire", or something more sinister.

So they actually started the Fireworks, apparently it was done to stop crowds leaving early and clogging "streets" while firefighting is on the go.

And this is why I'll never ever work in a tall building again. My highest was around 20 floor.

16 hurt as fire erupts at Dubai hotel

Dubai - A huge fire ripped through a luxury Dubai hotel on Thursday night as people gathered to watch New Year's Eve celebrations, injuring at least 16 people, authorities said.

Dubai's government media office tweeted that a "fire has been reported in the Address Downtown hotel. Authorities are currently on-site to address the incident swiftly and safely".

The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.

The 63-storey building, which is close to Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest tower, was engulfed in flames across several floors as sirens wailed and helicopters hovered overhead, witnesses said.

Dubai's police chief said all the hotel's residents had been evacuated from the scene of the blaze, which had still not been extinguished some two hours after it broke out.

"All the residents are out," General Khamis Matar al-Mzeima said.

"Until the fire is put out, we will not have information on what caused it," he added.
