Dubai probes cause of massive hotel fire

Dubai - Smoke was still rising from a 63-storey luxury hotel in Dubai on Friday as authorities worked to determine the cause of the spectacular fire that engulfed the building on New Year's Eve.

The huge blaze at The Address Downtown hotel erupted about 17:30GMT on Thursday, sparking panic but no reports of serious injuries.

Authorities went ahead with a dazzling fireworks display at the nearby Burj Khalifa - the world's tallest skyscraper - despite the inferno, the latest in a series of fires in recent years to hit the buildings that make up Dubai's futuristic city scape.

Have you seen how people ignore alarms, too busy being busy, or someone else's problem. Also a building this size at peak time/fill to near capacity will be very difficult to evacuate without lifts and lifts are normally disabled when the fire suppression systems are triggered.

I disagree. If there is a real emergency people tend to evacuate quite quickly. That wasn't a random false burglar alarm.

That's relative to the point where a person realizes it is in fact a real emergency. Not many people have experience or fully understand fire alarms.

Had exactly the same thought, downturn in property in Dubai, a developer looking for some cash and decides a "firework display" has caused the fire (unfortunately the fire was started a bit prematurely by accident or incompetence?).

Dude that building isn't even connected to the sewerage system - they remove the sht with trucks (really). "sophisticated fire suppression system" - lol. That crowd over there builds about as well as the local tenderpreneurs. Only reason the stuff doesn't fall to pieces is that most of the engineering talent is imported.

Though there are still plenty of stories about the sewage problems in Dubai, the sewage plant doesn't seem able to cope and there are often reports of schools of "floaters" in the sea off the beaches and lakes sometimes get used for overflow.

For example:

Some residents of Jumeirah Village Triangle (JVT) are complaining of a pervasive ill odour in parts of the areas.

“Big orange honey wagons”, are the description trucks entering from several directions every 10 minutes, affected residents offer to the suggestion waste is being at some specific location, that leaves the odour in the area.

Jumeirah Village Triangle (JVT) residents point to the area bordering Orchid Street. Heading towards Al Khail Road, there is a patch of wasteland where this road turns right. More than 40 trucks are queued up every day to dump waste, claims Rob Keddie, a resident in JVT.

“Last week the trucks were dumping at an additional location so the truck load is split between two areas,” Sara (name changed), a JVT resident, adds.

According to Aziz, a resident in JLT, the dumping occurs at a lake situated in the wasteland between Jumeirah Park and Jumeriah Lakes Towers.

I can't find the article but supposedly Dubai also use pipes, only problem is they don't go that far out to sea, which is why the people on the beaches share the water with little floating logs every so often :erm:.

Had a look today. It was difficult to get a good shot because the sun was right behind the building, but managed one or two bright enough to see the damage.

That's pretty bad, almost from every floor damaged.
