So this is the problem ....

I was on another forum and normal surfing for 20 minutes and my send and receive was 378,722 bytes sent -1,990,827 bytes received .... which is about normal. My stats for this forum however, and this is only since yesterday, is 2,371,842 - 3,579,408 ........ for 10 minutes! Very early this morning I was on and noticed that after an hour I had 'sent' 19mb and received just about 11mb. And it's only happening here, so wtf is going on

Each thread you read on MyBB is about 100kb. So the 3mb down in 10 minutes sounds do-able (=One new thread opened every 20seconds).

If you browse the photo section, then it'll shoot skyhigh.

Also, it depends on the type of forum. Is the other one also a vbulletin type forum?

Like I said ...... until yesterday, I was doing about 10-13mb an hour on this site including clicking on links, checking pics, etc. So it's been a huge jump. Other forums are Prophecy and NAG .... don't know if they are vbulletin or not. I just had my status box open while I refreshed a page here and it's munching big time  ............. so ja, wtf

I dunno. A refresh on this page chows ~90kb on my side.

First thing I do when I'm hunting for missing cap is to install Comodo firewall on the PC. It shows all the active connections + destination IPs + how much traffic is going where. That way when you suspect something dodgy you can check out whats cooking.

Maybe other firewalls/programs have a similar function.

Yeah, I use sygate and it has a traffic log which I check on now and then. Only thing active atm is: serv.mybroadband.co.za and google-analytics.com which is normal ............. /me has no clue.

Oh and I think mine also uses 90kb per refresh .......... it seems the same then  Still can't understand why it's only higher since yesterday though.

This is a sad thread. :( Counting kb's from reading VB forums that don't even allow sigs or avatars.

Do any of you know how to determine the download/upload totals that go through a router ... i.e. to monitor the whole connection, not just 1 PC?

Ideally:
You would use a dedicated machine that would have two network interfaces, one for inbound and another for outbound. Your router would be connected to these two interfaces. From there you would use the machine as a gateway server which, using eg IPCOP, is able to monitor the bandwidth usages of connected machines.

Any cheaper simpler solutions :p ... preferably free ones that I'd know how to implement :p

I've tried that route myself. Try paessler maybe. Apparently it is a pretty good one. Otherwise go to www.soft32.com and search for monitoring software there. They have a wide variety.
