We've got a lot of our Laptops coming up for replacement soon, most of them being HP Omnibook XE3's. They've done well and have lasted a good few years on us. I'm looking for the next model to replace them with and was wondering what your experiences have been with the models currently available. I was thinking about using one of the following:

HP Compaq nx6125 series
HP Compaq nx6110 series

Anybody had experiences with them ?

HP's aren't all that durable. For durable, you need something like an iBook. I assume you need a windows based laptop. Not sure what to recommend, but my advice is to stay away from HP Compaq. Mine is most certainly not durable

Theyre both good, but what do you mean by durable ? You gonna bounce em from the 3rd floor window ?

Hopefully no bouncing going on! Well the Omnibooks seemed to be pretty tough, they are basically used by reps and they go to a lot of Farms etc. Some of the chaps aren't too Tech savvy so it would be a complete waste getting them top of the range products. Basically we're looking for something that isnt going to fall apart too soon and can cope with basic office use etc

Recently upgraded to Ballpoint pens ;)

We normally get Acers for the guys that do a lot of travelling, the Travelmate series are perfect for that role. I've found that the Acers can be a bit unreliable at times, allthough Ive had no complaints from the guys using the latest models.

From a Business point of View the HP Compaq nx6110 series would be your best option. Well priced, hard wearing, easy to use. + support on those laptops - Hardware and software - is easy to find.

I had problems with my Toshiba but service was great.
I read somewhere that the HP Pavillion series were not going to be sold in SA. Reason given was because they couldnt repair them! - Something to keep in mind.

Agree with Person.

I would also recommend the Fujitsu-Siemens Pro V2040.

You have PM.

The Siemens are not bad latops but the fact that only Makro sell them, and have no where to get them repaired may be a problem. At the moment they use Springbok Information Systems but they are not much good. Should they break something Siemens will not replace at no cost.

Just purchased an IBM Thinkpad T3. Seems a lot more rugged than previous laptop (mecer) and has good specs with exception of lack of usb ports, which can be overcome. DVD Writer, 80GB HDD etc

Woot no usb?
thats madness everything is freakin USB lately even microwaves

IBM I think makes some laptops for the military, they are very durable and waterproof ... go to their web site and do some search

Just beware that here in SA, you can not custom order an IBM. Take one of their standard configurations, or leave it! And screen resolution is mostly 1024x768 only! Further very good machines, and battery life is reasonable as well.

All military Laptops are stocked by "Fenix" the owners of Alienware. They are dust, water, shock and EMP proof. + they cost upwards of $3000.

Macro are not the only ones that sell Siemens. I have sourced Siemens notebooks for customers, although the standard models differ slightly from the ones Macro sell.

Anyone seen that IBM add where they promo the new shock proof interior of the IBMs??

Two guys standing at the bar, one raving about how shock resistant his new IBM notebook is, so his friend decides to shove the thing off the bar counter.

After a few seconds of staring, the first guy says: "Dude, that's not mine!"
