Durban beaches closed due to massive waves

City authorities say they were advised by the Sharks Board that shark nets have been removed because of the weather conditions.

Currently , sea swells in Durban are currently at 4 metres and there is a 15 kilometres per hour South Easterly wind.

Head of Parks and Recreation Thembinkosi Ngcobo says they are hoping to reopen beaches by tomorrow.

"They will then make an assessment which they normally do in the early hours of the morning, before six o'clock. They will than advise us whether or not we should continue to close our beaches but we're hoping that the situation will improve given that apparently the rains have stopped. Then we will make the announcement once we have received advice from them," he said.

There is a large cutoff-low currently positioned in the Mozambique Channel, south of Madagascar. Unsettled conditions are likely to persist for the next day or two.

4m swells and they freak out in Durban?

One of the best times of my life was sitting up by the front-facing window of the upper lounge on the Symphony (one of those smallish MSC cruise liners) in 12m swells off Cape Town. The ship would come down one swell and the next swell would tower over the ship, which would then hit it hard and the splash would go over the bow of the ship and hit the lounge window. Then the ship would climb up to the top of the swell, and drop...sometimes enough to get that "losing your stomach" feeling you get when you hit certain road dips at speed....and then it starts all over again.

Good times :)

In my life, I have never slept as well as I did on a ship in a storm. Between the hum of the engines and the storm literally rocking you to sleep, it was the most peaceful, restful nights I've ever enjoyed.

The swell was around 12m off shore, close in shore it was 4m and crashing quite heavily...

I could see the waves crashing on the beach over the treeline from my office.

Being Durban you could probably see surfers being flung wildly into the air as well....then going back for more.
