Pays to be vigilant!

Durban - Two men have died after they allegedly attacked a cyclist in a botched robbery near a popular Durban mountain biking venue, on Sunday.

According to a source, the cyclist claimed to have been ambushed by the men, who attempted to rob him early on Sunday on the road to Giba Gorge Mountain Bike Park, near the N3.

He had been forced to stop, near a bridge, and while they were tugging at his bike, he stabbed each once with his pocket knife, his speed taking them by surprise.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Shooz Magudulela, confirmed the man had reported the incident at the Mariannhill police station.

Magudulela said when police went to the scene, one of the attackers was found dead.

Netcare 911 spokesman, Chris Botha, said police search and rescue officials hiked down a steep slope to reach the first man. He was found dead with a stab wound.

Botha said a couple of hundred metres from the scene they found the second man lying near a stream with a critical wound.

He was stabilised, put on a ventilator and taken to hospital.

Magudulela said on Sunday cases of murder and attempted murder had been opened.

The hospital this morning confirmed the second man had died later.

Giba cycling club chairman, Travis Goveia, said he was not surprised by the attack.

“This is not the first time something like this has happened on that road. What did surprise, though, was how it went down and somebody dying,” said Goveia.

He said there had been numerous attacks on people on the road, not only cyclists, but people walking home from work as well.

Goveia said they had repeatedly advised people not to ride bicycles on the dirt road to the gorge.

He advised people to rather go to the park and use an alternative entrance.

He emphasised that the incident had not happened inside the park as has been reported on social media. He said the gorge had security stationed inside it.

Yeah, more details needed, but he is in for the ride of his life now.

Once had a guy pull a long knife on me, meanwhile i had my pocket knife ready but concealed the whole encounter long before he pulled his but didnt use it on him. Luckily i ran away while he was drawing. But i could have been dead because I refrained from using mine also had lots of time to hit him with my car but thought of the consequences. This went the other way geez i dont know anymore.

Was also my own fault as he didn't rob me but someone else and i gave case because every other person just looked the other way. Needless to say evil will prevail in future as I will have to ignore it to live another day.

U wot?
Guy pulled a knife on you but you had yours ready before he pulled his? Why did you have a knife at the ready?

Luckily i ran away while he was drawing.

U wot?
You ran away how could you use your car?

Details...jeez.

I always carry a pocket knife day in and out. Mostly for apples really. So he robbed an old lady in broad daylight at a mall and everyone ignored it, he ran passed my car and i gave chase. Could have hit him but rather stopped then gave chase of foot. Grabbed him he stumbled could have used it at any point. Tugged each other still could use it. Then he went for he's in his jacket pocket so i ran back to my car and the bastard got away.

He tried to chase me down a little but wasn't fast enough and all the people watching put him off

Case will fail. Self defence. Taxpayer money wasted trying to prosecute a hero.

Not necessarily, no witnesses to collaborate that it was self defense, they might not have weapons etc. Might go that way, might not. Will have to wait and see

If they where trying to take his bike worth R10,000 or more?
not your average Mugging you must also think of the location
remote two onto one. Think I would react in the same way, good
on you mate 2 less scum to worry about.

Also no witnesses to say it wasn't self-defence...apart from the "victim". Unless he stabbed them both in the back, he's going to walk.

2 criminals less. No sympathy here.

We have the same exact issues with cyclists being attacked once a week almost outside Ocean View / Kommetjie Road, in Deep South, Cape Town. If this was the outcome each time, would be a short few weeks before all the criminals became worm feeders.

Only downside here is that the cyclist will be charged for self defence.
