A man has died and another is seriously injured after they were found with stab wounds at the bottom of a gorge in KwaZulu-Natal on Sunday, while another man died when he fell 60 metres down a cliff in Upper Tongaat, paramedics said.
In the first case, Netcare 911 paramedics responded to a call where two men were injured in Giba Gorge, Pinetown on Sunday morning.
Netcare spokesperson Chris Botha said paramedics and police search and rescue arrived at the scene and had to hike down a steep slope for about five hundred metres before they reached the first man.
“After the patient was examined they found that he had sustained a penetrating wound and he tragically died before our arrival.”
Botha said the team hiked a further five hundred metres along a path and found another patient lying near a river with a critical penetrating wound.
The patient was stabilised at the scene and taken to a hospital in Chatsworth for further treatment.
Botha said the police were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Cliff fall
Meanwhile, IPSS Medical Rescue’s Paul Herbst said paramedics and the police K9 unit were dispatched to the Tongaat area after the second incident.
“Rescuers had to be lowered down the cliff face so as to gain access to the body of the deceased individual. A specialised hoisting system was used to hoist the body up to accessible ground.”
He said the exact cause of the accident was unknown and the police had opened an inquest docket.
