Durban - A neurosurgeon at Inkosi Albert Luthuli hospital has been charged with conspiracy to commit murder.
Dr Anand Rapiti, 43, allegedly hired one of his patients to kill his brother-in-law, who is also a doctor at the facility.

The plan backfired when the hit man alerted police.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) arrested Rapiti at the hospital on December 18.

He spent Christmas in Westville Prison and was granted R5000 bail when he appeared before magistrate Kevin Bruorton last week.

Police alleged that during consultations Rapiti talked Desmond Maneveldt into having Dr Melvin Naidu murdered.

On one occasion, according to a source who asked not to be named, Rapiti, who is an avid hunter, suggested Naidu be invited to a hunting outing where his accidental death could be staged.

Instead Maneveldt tipped off police.

Rapiti’s initial bail application came before magistrate Vanitha Armu.

Prosecutor Calvin Govender, who opposed bail, argued that Naidu’s life was in danger. The matter was adjourned and the application then came before magistrate Bruorton.

Rapiti’s legal representative, advocate Paul Jorgensen, read out a statement from his client in support of the application.

Rapiti, who is single and lives with his mother in uMhlanga, said he did not resist arrest. He admitted knowing the State’s two witnesses - Naidu and Maneveldt - “but I lack the ability or intent to interfere with such witnesses”.

“My continued incarceration during this matter in court will not be in the interests of society. I will not endanger the safety of anyone in society.”

Rapiti said he intended pleading not guilty to the charge he faced.

Sad.

Another reminder that being educated and clever is not the same as being good. Which inter alia means education alone can't solve the problem of crime or evil in our society, let alone voting for bad politicians or policies. This little point has many political, social, and philosophical ramifications.

The victim was murdered this week in a separate incident

Man stabbed to death at Umhlanga hotel was a top surgeon

The 51-year-old man who was stabbed to death in the corridor of a plush Umhlanga hotel has been identified as top orthopaedic surgeon Dr Melvin Naidu.
Naidu, who was the subject of a failed hit last year allegedly by his brother-law neurosurgeon Dr Anand Rapiti, was in the company of a 31-year-old woman at the upmarket The Capital Pearls when he died on Thursday.
Advocate Paul Jorgensen, who had represented Rapiti in the conspiracy to commit murder matter before the Durban magistrate’s court earlier this year, told TimesLIVE that the charge had been withdrawn against his client.
The National Prosecuting Authority did not respond to a query about the matter.
According to previous media reports Rapiti was accused of hiring a patient to have Naidu killed following an alleged family feud.

Damn. That's just sick. Show you that the justice system can not protect you. Same happens to people who are abused. Until you die or becomes next to nothing, everything you say is considered a lie.

Looks like the guy was murdered by someone he knows and probably had a relationship with.

Yeah. But he was told a couple of months earlier he will get murdered. Must have been an awful couple of months. To think he couldnt escape. And nothing could protect him.

Unfortunate for him, when the number number is out. Seems Inkatha and ANC's tendecies are rubbing out on too many people in KZN, there is just too much drama.

So Dr. Melvin Naidu was one of four sons who all became doctors. One killed during an armed robbery in Durban, one died in a car accident and now one murdered in Umhlanga. The remaining brother will make the necessary arrangements. Dr Zweli Mkhize tell us again why there is a shortage of doctors and nurses in this country. Is it any surprise so many doctors and nurses leave the country. Maybe they want to live to see old age?
