Cape Town - A mini earth tremor has reportedly been experienced in parts of KwaZulu-Natal, with a number of Twitter users saying they felt the earth move at around 11:00 on Saturday.

The tremor is understood to have lasted for four seconds, and was felt from Richards Bay all the way to the Midlands.

"The ground shook for a couple of seconds," user @RealOBHS tweeted.

@teachernology tweeted: "Wow... just had the house shake."

@SiyaFuzeSA weighed in: "People won't take us serious guys if we call it a tremor, we just survived an earthquake bafwethu in Durban, cishe safa!"

But @Piscesboi2016 reckoned it was not that impressive: "lol seriously? My farts are stronger then that 'earthquake'."

ER24 tweeted that a 3.1 magnitude earth tremor had hit Durban and surrounding areas.

According to KwaZulu-Natal Emergency Medical Services, no injuries or damage has been reported.

They tweeted that the tremor was felt from iLembe down to Port Shepstone and inland to Pietermaritzburg.

3.1 tremor hits Durban

JOHANNESBURG – A 3.1 magnitude tremor has hit Durban and surrounding areas. It’s understood the tremor happened just after 11h30 am and lasted just a few seconds.

No injuries have been reported.

ER24 Russel Meiring says there may be a possibility of aftershocks.

#DurbanTremor shakes coastal belt

Durban - The earth tremor that shook the KwaZulu-Natal coastal regions on Saturday morning is unlikely to be greater than magnitude 3.0, the Council for Geoscience said on Saturday.

“Unfortunately, we can only confirm the location and magnitude on Monday,” Council for Geosciences seismologist Michelle Grobbelaar told ANA.

“But the earthquake seems to be located in the KZN region and was felt quite widely in the province. It occurred at 11.30 this morning [Saturday] and from the reports I have received, it is unlikely to be greater than magnitude 3.0, but this needs to be confirmed,” she said.

Grobbelaar said there had been earthquakes in the province before – the earliest on the council’s records was in 1932 off the coast at St Lucia – “so one shouldn’t be concerned but just aware of how to react to such events”.

Unlikely relation between Taiwan quake and #DurbanTremor: Expert

The seismic event lasted about 5 seconds and was felt in many parts of Durban as well as Pietermaritzburg, Howick and the south coast.


There has been speculation the Taiwan quake may have triggered the tremor here.


But Project Manager at the Council for Geoscience, Michelle Grobbelaar, does not think so.


"These plates are huge, so if one moves it does take a long time for the other one to respond. Secondly, we are quite far away from the African Plate Boundary so we have not seen enough evidence to support these theories. With the distance between South Africa and Taiwan it is very unlikely that the two are related," she said.

Experts say it was recorded at a magnitude of 3.8 and occurred off the coast of Umhlanga. The Council for Geoscience has released the final figures of the earth tremor that was felt across Durban and other parts of the province on Saturday.


It says the seismic was recorded at a magnitude of 3.8 and occurred off the coast of Umhlanga. It was felt from the south coast to Howick.
