Durban renaming approved

A case in point would be Hendrick Verwoerd Drive in Randburg.

I would have thought this would be the first road to be renamed, yet 14 years down the line it still stands... and there have been no protests ???

With good old Hendrick arguably being the grandaddy of apartheid and everyone apparently being sooo sensitive about the issue, one has to wonder if the ruling party has just being bullsh!tting us about some names being offensive to people of color and hence the need to change them

Could it be that the name changes that are being instituted are specifically intended to p!ss people off and hence create more of that lovely election winning racial tension

We still have a Hendrik Verwoerd Drive in Centurion as well. Come to think of it I can seem to remember why the name was changed from Verwoerdburg .... would have kept the bad seeds out who all live in these new "security" estates in their lowrise modern Tuscan slums.

It happend in PTA aslo, students actually got a realy street sign board made that said "De La Rey Street". And one evening they moved in, and replaced some of the mandela street signs with this.

But its like a spoilt child whose parents never punished it (:D ), its now just running around grabbing everything and saying: "mine mine mine"

Some comments from Potch council spokesperson Kaizer Mohau regarding the recent "defacement" of street signs:

"racist anarchists" in Potchefstroom were removing new street-name signs and dumping them in the Vaal River. He said 15 to 20 new signs had been dumped in the river.

How does he know these people are racist or that the signs were dumped in the Vaal? I thought the Mooi River was closer :)

...these actions were aimed at causing what he termed "political and social instability"
:)heheheheh - one wonders what changing the names in the first place was aimed at causing??

I would change the street names also, you can argue I'm a racist and possibly, I am, but my intention would be to resist the name changing process, I want my history to be remembered as it were, the ANC can create their own history.

So how do I join this resistance group?

The ZACF said the defacement of signs had been "clearly" carried out by racist rightwingers opposed to transformation. "Not by leftwingers among whom we anarchists proudly count ourselves," it said.
Interesting conclusion but with some logic errors. Being opposed to a mass (180+) name change is not necessarily being against transformation. In fact you could say they are pro-democracy and want to see a tranparent/fair process in place. Not just ANC people renaming stuff after their own people.

The name-changing process is merely a huge distraction ploy.
At least down here in Durban it appears to have worked.

A masterly row with Herr Doktor Sutcliffe at the helm distracts everyone from the massive changes taking place on the power supply grid.

And that would surely apply to the entire country.... google my
>a Teklom Tecchie sat pickin his nose< and tell me if it rings any bells....

toady :D

Go ahead and change the names! I rallied and protested for Pretoria and now know that the strength of the ANC is so overpowering that the only way to defeat it, would be to let it run it's course unopposed. We should write our grievences on paper and in the letters of newspapers, online, in songs and in poetry. We should note our discontent in the footnotes of history to be the explaining text to the imagery of disillusionment and tragedy. That is what is happening to Zimbabwe and if the ANC continues the way it is now, trampling on people's history, and whoring with the bastard beliefs of false and fake history ala Tshwane then we are headed the same way. This is a difficult road because Africa has a history of voters more than capable of suffering at the hand of their own leaders for decades on end. With smiles on their faces at that!

I wonder when they're going to start a mandatory renaming of people.

Where the streets have no name

Why not do something for a reason, why not for example rename streets in a district that has a lot of restaurants with food names, Curry Street and Rice Street - Coffee street could have Coffee shops, bookshops, even a CNA

Lets take the idea one further, for the 2010 World Cup why not rename some of the streets near the stadiums after famous football players, like Pele Street, George Best Road and so on

Because that would make sense and be really fun and this is not about sense or fun but more about causing racial tension and violence between the citizens of SA.

Potchefstroom - A little-known organisation has taken offence at the city council blaming "racist anarchists" for the vandalism of new street signs.

The Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Federation (ZACF) said its reputation had been "besmirched" by the remarks of council spokesperson Kaizer Mohau.

The ZACF said: "We presume that Mohau is simply politically naive in... his mistaken attribution of these acts of vandalism."

It described itself as a "small but active anarchist movement in southern Africa".

Mohau said on Monday that "racist anarchists" in Potchefstroom were removing new street name signs and dumping them in the Vaal River.

Mohau said a street sign for Nelson Mandela Rylaan had also been defaced to read "Dela Rylaan" - an apparent reference to Boer war general Koos de la Rey.

"Sixty percent of new progressive street names have been removed in the last few months," he said.

Mohau said these actions were aimed at causing what he termed "political and social instability" and would not be tolerated.

He said 15 to 20 new street name signs had been dumped in the Vaal River by racist anarchists.

The ZACF said the defacement of signs had been "clearly" carried out by racist rightwingers opposed to transformation. "Not by leftwingers among whom we anarchists proudly count ourselves," it said.

Feelings have been running high in the past few months about proposals to rename Potchefstroom as Tlokwe.

The final decision has not been taken.

"besmirch"... one of my favourite words of all time.
