Vumacam expands to Durban

Vumacam has announced that the City of eThekwini metropolitan municipality, which includes Durban, will be rolling out its surveillance technology across the region.

“It is anticipated that ultimately 2,400 public space cameras will be installed, with the first phase consisting of 115 poles going live at critical locations,” Vumacam stated.
 
As was seen by the Parliamentary fire fiasco, cameras are only as good as the personnel that man them. Interesting going forward.......
 
They were talking mainly about this when wanting to roll out fibre in our area a few years ago. Glad it’s finally got some traction in Durban.

I think it’ll be a good deterrent for crime if used correctly and if security companies come on board.

And that's why Vumacams actually work. Every now and then some scumbag tries their luck in our area and are caught before they can return for a second viewing of the area. It's not 100% effective but it's better than most systems...

No anti-Vumacam campaign this time around? I stopped keeping an eye on those developments more than a year ago.
 
Did eThekwini procure this per MFMA? Was there a tender?

Or is it Vumatel rolling this out and providing eThekwini access to the cameras?

There is a critical difference here with serious legal implications.

That is something I'd like to know as well...

I am definitely not against the cameras being there, but it needs to be done properly and above board.

Its all probably technically not illegal, I'm sure.

Municipalities work in an incredibly complex Supply Chain environment (per the MFMA and Auditor General requirements ... and especially so in response to Zondo Commission findings). It's a legal nightmare at present and staff can go over a career-ending landmine at any time. No matter what amazing benefits the private sector can offer a City to the benefit of the community and taxpayers there are truly hectic processes to follow and compliance boxes to tick. This makes service delivery a nightmare.

Not all municipalities are equally pedantic but these days the AG is all over everything, and goes into the nitty gritty like never before. Some Cities politically don't care much for AG findings, but there are others where it is politically critical to get clean audits, and staff not doing everything exactly right will face severe consequences.

All/any relationships/partnerships with the private sector will draw and receive serious attention, and therefore my question.

From my understanding it's a private initiative where they partner with security companies in the area, who apprehend the suspects and then notify the SAPS when arrests need to be effected. It's seen as providing assistance to an understaffed police service.

So if you want it in your area, you will need to lobby for it, almost like getting fibre in your area. They will do an assessment based on things like whether there is fibre, established security companies to partner with etc...
