Durban's goal of becoming the first truly smart city in South Africa and on the African continent has reached a milestone with the city revealing on Tuesday that its much-vaunted optic fibre broadband network is now fully operational and is set to be opened up to business and residents.

Now this is the way to go... instead of that stupid vapourware "Broadband over Power Lines"!!!

Great that Durban is ahead of the other cities:). So what's the chances they can get the network down here too?:o

To be honest this is first I'm hearing of this, and I live in Durban!!! (Pinetown actually, but close enough) But I hope this is a good sigh of things to come.
 
This has been ongoing for awhile, but its great to see Durban finally getting some of its act together.

For now, they're only allowed to sell spare capacity to corporates etc... not to residential clients from the way I read that article, so us lowly peasant citizens will have to wait awhile longer for it.
 
The City of Tshwane's municipality has been blowing this whistle for years, but so far (surprise, surprise :rolleyes:) nothing has come off it. They have an extensive fiber network which has been installed a few years ago.

Ms Subban confirmed that the broadband network is now fully operational and the City has appointed Dimension Data as the service provider to manage the network.

Since Dimension Data owns Internet Solutions, isn't this a huge conflict of interest?

How are they going to be incentivised to willingly undercut their own subsidiary?
 
You have to remember that the Durban City Manager Mike Sutcliffe has a habit of shooting his mouth off and then things going quiet and disappearing.

This network has been mentioned since 2005 with little / nothing to show for it. I will believe when they show us that the actual service(s) are working and usable.
 
and Durban is close to where Seacom will be landing... and the weather is nice most times of the year... All the techies will be moving to Durbs!
 
On second thought - hasn't the municipality perhaps just hijacked Neotel's fibre ring? LoL :D :p
 
EThekwini Broadband ?

Durban's "next generation network" is based on a bunch of optical fiber lines that the Durban electricity installed use to detect faults & payment (similar to infranco). They've been trailing BPL for years now. But they still dont have a license from Icasa which is whats holding em back. C'mon Mike Sutcliffe show us you have the balls to take on Telscum & Neetel. I cant wait to have my electricity, water, rates & broadband on one bill. Heres holding thumbs for 2010 commercial launch for EThekwini Broadband. :-D
