Durban rolls out broadband network

This move has been in the pipe for years... and was started way back when Sutty boy was still doing a good job. The whole plan is to make Durban the ICT hub of Africa. One of the stages was SmartXchange.

My only concern is how Sutty boy will work out the billing, considering how they used Google Earth to value the houses in Durban for the new Rates system... my parent's are paying R680 per month on rates now... they are forced to sell the house... they were told by an agent they won't even get 600K for it... but according to Sutty boy's wizz kids at metro, the house is worth 1.4 million??? WTF...

Oh... and bear in mind, that ICASA is influenced by politics... and Sutty has his arse deep in the jacuzzi with the powers that be... He will get the license with no hicup... then the Big three will protest (as they always do) and there will be a long drawn out public debate and in the end... MTN, Vodacom and Telkom will have to step down and let durban do it's thing.

Moral of the story... entering into a political debate is like entering into the special olympics... even if you win... you are still a retard!

Thank the Lord we have the best Government money can buy...
 
OK, let me get this straight: Another well-intentioned, but hopelessly misguided arm of government is spending taxpayers' money on attempting to set up another Telkom, only on a much smaller, sub-economic scale. Why is this a good thing?

Of course, if they choose not simply to become another inefficient retail government-owned provider (like Sentech), they can offer wholesale bandwidth at typical municipal service levels. That way, I guess they may then have a couple of customers - say Sentech and iBurst - since it won't really matter when it's working and when it's not.

Personally, I'd rather stick to a company - any company - that is actually in the field of telecommunications...

Hahahaha good one schurtek. But seriously dontcha guys gt your other utilities 4rm municipalities ? There service levels aren't bad. The problem is we just complain too much. As the article says they being managed by Dimension Data, so expect efficiency unlike At&t wen dey cocked up telscum. This is still early stages now for them, remember how long Neetel took to offer a residental service. Creating a next gen network is one thing but deploying a whole powerline communications network is another. Icasa is still making guidelines for it, with reguards to deploying technology & combating spectrum interferance. Ultimately it will come jus a matter of time.
 
I wonder if Durban municipality will set guide lines to DD as far as pricing goes? This is really great if it actually pans out, but I can't help feeling sceptical about the pricing. With a commercial service provider involved, and the lack of competitive behaviour in the sector, I can't see the price model being much different from what is on offer currently. Hope I'm wrong, but so far none of the ISPs / Telecoms operators have really proved otherwise.

I gotta agree. I really don't see anybody standing out anytime soon and offering an ADSL package that is gonna give me a semi cause of its great price. It is so much easier to just offer the norm and make a quick buck. And on that note I really hope Neotel has just an ADSL package without all those extra bits and pieces of free minutes and sms's etc etc. All I'm interested in right now is a good, fast, cheap ADSL connection.

Merely an attempt to distract us from the potholes, broken traffic lights and poo contanminated beaches.

Though admittedly I've been aware that Dbn Electrickery has been working on it.

Ask Telscum for ADSL?? That I have done...I'm sitting 2months down the line, still waiting for my line :mad: apparently there are infrastructure problems at the exchange ((but I stay on a main RD!!:confused:))

It will be years till I get ADSL *period* ...

Neotel are preparing to start rolling out a SDSL service... like ADSL but it doesn't have a fixed uplink downlink speed... the speed adjusts between uplink and downlink, so if you are uploading a big file, then the downlink will decrease and the uplink will increase...
 
Neotel are preparing ALOT of things.....

Whether we'll see any of them in a respectable time-frame is a different story.
 
Durban a Smart City? Don't make me laugh! As in smart monkeys dancing to the tune of a greedy and corrupt Town Clerk? Pfftt...:mad:

Understand, that Icasa made a ruling that Telkom had to provide infrastructure to Neotel while Neotel rolled out their own... Neotel said NO THANK YOU!!! It costs a great deal to roll out this kind of infrastructure, and it takes a lot of man power... so understand that it is not as simple as click... there's the infrastructure...
 
durbans broadband

i have sent a few emails to Jacqui Subban who is in charge of ethekwinis IT section (something like that) and she assures me that they are busy working to get cheap fast internet to all residents of the durban area- she says 1Mb min speed, no capping but price not finalised yet- i told her to keep it around R150 monthly - so that all can afford it-
please pray fot us Durbanites- that this plan comes to pass during my lifetime.
 
Can't see the Ndlambe (Port Alfred) Municipality following suit... somehow.

Why would Neotel rollout DSL to customers - no money, corporates we need more business from corporates SELL SELL SELL
