Durban - Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium has generated over R4 million through its sky car and bungee jumping facility in the past few months, the city said on Thursday.

"This proves that our stadium will never be a white elephant. The over R4 million does not include money generated by businesses at the stadium,” said city manager, Mike Sutcliffe.

The stadium, which was completed months before the World Cup, had become one of South Africa’s tourist attractions, he said.

He said more than 80 000 people had made the trip to the top of the 106m arch with a sky car to experience stunning views of the city and Indian Ocean.

“More than 25 000 people have taken the stadium tours to discover what goes on behind the scenes at a stadium and almost 3 000 have taken the 550 steps to the top of the arch,” he said.

Recently I was in DBN and took my family to the sky car on to find that it was grounded due to technical failure. I hope they have sorted the problems out cause not many people would appreciate getting stuck up there.

Johannesburg - The "Sky Car" that takes visitors to the top of the 106m arch over Durban's new World Cup stadium has been grounded for the second time in two months, officials said Monday.

The Sky Car has repeatedly left visitors stuck at the top of the arch, a problem the city's World Cup organisers blame on a faulty data cable that was engaging the car's automated emergency brake.

"Unfortunately this data cable is specialised and purpose-made for the Sky Car and hence we have had to order a replacement cable from overseas," organisers said in a statement, adding that the car was expected to reopen by May 7.

The World Cup kicks off on June 11.

Officials first closed the car in late March after about 150 people were stuck on the arch.

Some visitors were stranded for up to two hours due to the emergency stop system. Local media reported that a 63-year-old woman collapsed while trying to walk down the 550 steps to the ground.

More than 80 000 visitors have taken the ride to the viewing platform at the top of the arch, which offers 360-degree views over the city's beaches and a bungee jump over the field.

I know hence I won't be holding my breath:D

It's really said that bad news have come to define this forum...

Yay, R4 million down.... R4873 bajillion to go.

this stadium will have been declared derilict and consigned to be demolished when they finally break even! :D

And if you had the brain I would have explained oink.

No need. If one cannot communicate using human language I really have no desire to communicate with them at all.

The stadium is amazing. The views from the top over Durban are stunning. The beach front is looking absolutely incredible. The major road works are nearing completion and are going to make some of the roads into Durban an absolute pleasure to drive on. All thanks to the world cup! Bring it on!

Watch this thread fail JungleBoy. Not because it's your fault, but because anything remotely positive on these boards is conveniently ignored. If it isn't, then it will be derailed into another crime discussion.

Rather post some random crime/corruption story followed by an Oink. That seems to induce 'intelligent', active discussions :P

It's the same forum members that always try to dig up any dirt to prove that what ever project has been completed is actually a fail.
Then they sign off with that stupid "OINK"

4 million???? That's amazing!!!! Is it clean profit?

They can alost pay for their website now, wasn't that 10 million or something?
Or maybe even pay some of our VIP's hotel bills when they visit.
Or pay for their celebaration party.

Fantastic news!! :)

I just took a quick look at the maths. They say they have had 80,000 visitors ride in the sky car. It is R50 for an adult to go up. That works out to R4,000,000. The article states that is what was generated but it is obviously not straight profit as you have salaries to pay etc. The point though is that the stadium is not just standing empty when there are no games on. It is still generating an income.

I suppose the fear is that over time everyone would have ridden up the sky car and numbers may drop but then again that has not been the case with the cable cars in Cape Town. If there are tourists there will be a demand to go up.

I think this justifies the idea of incorporating the stadium into other lifestyle activities. So big up to Julie-May Ellingson and the team. This is great achievement for my home city :D

No it's not what it is used for.
And it is only stupid when you are not included in the joke..

Ooh, a little inside joke. How pre-school!

And by the way i'm one of the biggest pom pom people for the WC.
But flame me. It's oke. Proof me wrong and I'll say sorry.

You haven't actually said anything so what are we supposed to prove wrong! Unless you are referring to the sentence which says "I doubt that figures..."?

Which is open for interpretation but I'm assuming you mean you doubt the numbers quoted in the original post.

Perhaps better use of punctuation would have got your insult across better. I fixed it for you below. I also took the liberty of removing some of the unnecessary capital letters that were scattered in your response. But don't worry, I realise that the correct use of the English language does not directly equate to one's intelligence.

Does you peepee feel big now? good for you!!!

Oh cool . I was just saying about the cart thingy. I saw the stadium its very pretty!!

I have it on extremely good authority that the actual number is closer to 10k people being on/in it ...... no doubt it will be a feature (duh, it can't not be) when it's running properly and they sort out proper safety standards but one has to ask why they need to exaggerate the figures now?

Now they will tell you too shut up too...

I'm afraid to tell you that I did not need that post to make my penis (that's what us adults call it) feel big!

And interesting that you take offence to me correcting your posts, and as a result questioning your intelligence, when it was you that initially said :
And if you had the brain...
