Durban's Stadium Generates R4m

There were many of us at the time who said that these stadiums would become White Elephants, not because we didn't want the World Cup, we loved the World Cup, we went to the games, we enjoyed the Vibe. No, we were concerned that proper public consultuation and feasability studies had not been concluded. Other sports bodies had not been consulted.

We were called naysayers, doom and gloomers, killjoys, etc. so yes... here I am to gloat, and I am going to damn well enjoy it.

What is really sad is how some people see the exorbitant waste of public expenditure over and over again, and don't really give a damn about those poor and needy in South Africa who could really have benefited from that money.

Agreed.

The Durban, Green Point and Polokwane stadiums had longterm questions hanging over their heads from the beginning.

The Durban and Green Point stadiums should have been built with the intention of the Natal and WP rugby unions moving into them. If not, the existing rugby grounds (Newlands & Kings Park) should have been upgraded to facilitate the World Cup.

The Peter Mokaba stadium in Polokwane was always going to be a problem. They should have just upgraded the nearby Pietersburg Stadium and built it to the absolute minimum of FIFA requirements, much like the Royal Ba***eng stadium was.

Doing this would have massively trimmed the budget of hosting the tournament and ensured the regular usage of the modernised stadia.

The Lions should also turf Ellis Park in and go to Soccer City. The place may have history but it is in a horrible area and is a nightmare to get into and out of. Soccer City is a far easier ground to gain access to and its location may encourage more black folks to watch rugby. A win-win for everybody; Stadium gets paid off faster, the Lions attract larger crowds and top-flight rugby is taken to the door steps of a population demographic that rugby is accused of ignoring.

Unfortunately the lack of consultation from the outset is the major hindering factor here, and is not likely to change for the foreseeable future. The Sharks still have a 20 year lease on King's Park if I'm not mistaken and they'll generate less revenue at the new stadium, while the spectators will have a really crap view of the game, in relative terms at least. The stadium will also forever look barely full which is not something you want to see.

The LOC cocked up in all aspects of forward planning here and it is, sad to say, a white elephant...

Eish, new low dude. Necroposting AND debating with someone who has been banned.

What?! And you reckon had things been a resounding success up 'til now that these folk wouldn't have rezzed the thread to come and gloat over the naysayers? :D

In fact, you're right. There'd be a thousand new threads about it.

This stadium probably needs to generate a profit of some R250 million a year (profit, not turnover) in order not to be a white elephant.

What sort of finances is that? The stadium doesn't need to pay for its own construction financing only operating costs. The costs of construction are borne elsewhere.

Those are operating costs, not repayments! ;)

The stadium is hosting events, but not getting enough spectators. Amazulu play most of their matches at the stadium, but attendance isn't great. Why is Durban missing the concerts which Soccer City and CTS get? As for rugby, the suites are a minor issue, there is a whole tier open. As for sightlines, I haven't been in either, but the 2015 RWC will have matches in the London Olympic Stadium.

The suites are a minor issue?

Are you mad? Do you have any idea how much money the suites bring in for KZNRU?!?!

The new stadium has suites, pretty larnie ones at that.

They are really larney yes. They have 150 corporate hospitality suites..

Kings park has 350 corporate hospitality suites.

See the problem?

Yeah, but I've been to quite a few of those boxes (name is quite fitting). If they just halved the size of the suites at MM they'd have more than 350. I wonder how many of those boxes at kings park are vacant.

Let's face it, There was so much of arrogance that the rugby union was never included in negotiations in the first place. And now there obviously isn't enough incentive being offered to woo over a customer who is understandably being h@rd-@rsed

Yup, that would work, but i'm not sure how much changing would have to happen for the seating etc etc etc...

Time will tell in terms of the talks with the Sharks. I have a feeling the lease is actually the smaller part of the issue, its the number of boxes thats the big issue.

What are you talking about? He says the stadium will need to bring in R250m in profit.

Its the South African way... don't you know we have this insatiable need to pay off large infrastructure in stupidly short periods of time.

I think the boxes are just being used as an excuse. Right now I reckon the Sharks are just drukking the city(or whoever owns the stadium) a noel because they can ... and I don't blame them
