Sob story follows...

So struggling with weight loss, doing LCHF at the moment, some results but I seem to continue to fall off the bandwagon. I am not a gimmicky person, and understand that healthy eating and some exercise is the basic recipe required to become healthy, so I generally steer clear from injections, pills and weird diets.

I tend to hit a brick wall with everything I try, I have IBS so with basically all the "eating plans" or "lifestyles", my plumbing just stops working, or I end up with so much bowel pain that before I know it, I am back to eating all sorts of **** just so that everything there works normally again. I now also struggle with exercise, one or two light session and I am in pain and unable to walk (not muscle pain from gym)... but pain in my feet and knees. Now lately it is bouts of gout.

Hectic pace of life and all the above and I am just about at my witts end and can't seem to manage to get any sort of balance or plan off the ground. Been to the doc this week, he is conducting a long list of blood tests to see if everything is functioning normally.

My BMI is over 40. (140kg and 1.81m tall)

While waiting for the test results, he has prescribed Duromine. Now as with any medication, you can read up all sorts of stuff on the web, the depression, the mood swings, the actual weight loss, etc, etc.

Any real world experience with Duromine? I am now trying Duromine and when I eat, it's LCHF and then will try some walking (gym hectically far away and traffic nightmare). I am going to the US in 5 weeks time, just trying to get a more fit (ha ha I know) before then.

I am at my wits end. My next option is signing up for Survivor to starve for a while on an island. They will just need to hide all the rice and wild animals, cause I'll manage to come back 5kg heavier.

hi,

i have experience with Duromine. it really works for weight loss, it suppresses the heavy hunger and gives you a good energy boost through out the day. i never got hungry during the day and my work environment is very active. i will not, however, do mild to heavy cardio exercises while taking duromine. it makes your heart beat a little faster than normal but overall its not that bad, though if you are not fit while taking it it can became a issue. drink a lot of water....seriously, this is the best thing you can do with these pills as it cleanses your body much more efficient. if you don t like to drink a lot of water, rather leave the pills. your stool will definitely become consistent to a 12 hour period and it will be like that for the time you drink duromine. if your leave the pills for a week, your stool consistency will fall back to where it was. just my 2c.

other than that, get your mind right. i weigh about the same as you but im 5cm taller. i've got a boep and feel so overweight - even tough in not looking like Carel van Asweegen. if your mind is right, everything will fall in place. eat healthy but dont starve yourself. eat smaller portions. you will see with the duromine, you will want to eat only half of your regular portions. dont go for 2nds. eat one plate , half portion and keep to that. then keep on drinking a lot of water.

thats my 2cents. i lost 12kgs in 6 weeks on these pills. only other concern i can raise is that you should not be on these pills for longer than 3 months at once. one of my friends got high blood pressure for taking these pills for 12months straight... now she's got high blood pressure. not good.

after 3 months, take a break for a month and start again. dont eat yourself to death again in that month. duromine will take about a week to start working and a week to stop working in your system.

Don't diet change your lifestyle. Eat a normal balanced diet just with smaller portions. Get off your butt and exercise 3-4 times a week even if it is just a 5km walk at first but build up to going to gym and doing a mix of cardio and free weights.

It will take you 6-9 months but it will change you and your life forever.

Hahaha, slap tril. Dankie vir die advies.

I am going to write in English (for other participants) but don't worry, I am also Afrikaans as you can probably gather from my grammar as well.

Luckily I don't have any problems with water, if anything, I drink too much. This is something that I will probably try to get a little more under control as the heat slowly but surely start to subside. Well funny thing that, I went to a dietitian years ago and she told my my perfect weight for my bone structure is probably in the region of 105kg, I was very surprised, so yeah, I am a big boned boy. People can never believe when I tell them I weigh 140. They always guess round 105-110kg.

I just really think my body is starting to suffer, so if I can just get to a place a bit better than now, just to start doing some exercises without ceasing up.

I do have high blood pressure and am taking meds, but the doctor knows this, so I am sure he wouldn't have prescribed it if it was going to be a problem... well I hope not.

My aim is two months, then I should be at a place where I must take control of this situation. But you're right, I definitely need some getting the head right.

same here...

well, if you've got high blood pressure see how the duromine hold up... i just dont want to take any risks with my heart. i was in the gym once while is was on duromine and i started to feel naucious and very weird, felt like my heart is going to explode out of my chest. i took my blood pressures and it was 180/120 +-.... it was there and then i knew i was about to kap om. i then stopped exercising while using duromine and the doctor was so mad at me cause he said to me no rough excircising while using duromine.

your body will tell you if the duromine is messing with your system. the moment something feels wrong, leave the pills.

the best part for me was the awesome successful poop sessions. :D een moerse lange drol , woep waps en hys uit :D

Stick to something realistic for your diet. And don't go cold turkey like the way LCHF does it.
This is what I did when I started dieting (125 kg , 2 years ago)

I first got myself to hit a non-dieting amount of kJ every day so in your case, hit about 9000 - 10000 (that is a lot btw). If you are eating non-trashy foods, you will find this is more than what you actually need to eat. You could easily slot in a beer a day with this limit. Under this, experiment to see what foods aggravate your IBS and what don't (you probably know what works).
If you are comfortable at this limit, then reduce by 1000 for a month. Adjust it by reducing portion size and nothing else. So instead of 1 beer, you have half a beer.

Repeat until you are losing about 0.5 kg - 1 kg a week.

Well on some of the eating plans (was LCHF at some stage without any fat) I was on 4000kj a day. This truly was enough and ate less than this regularly.

I have to admit, the actual food preparation is a huge challenge. Getting the time to think about food to make that I didn't conventionally grow up with is difficult. When you have a workday and traffic behind you, I often find myself preparing something easy.

Look... patience is also an issue at the moment. I am 100% convinced that I am the reason to this whole problem, but I just need to get something that gets me to a place where there is actually hope. I can tell you now, loosing 0.5kg a week won't do much for me. I just need to feel a bit better man. The joint pains, the tiredness, the overheating, if I can just get that a bit under control some more, I am pretty confident that it will leave me with enough will to get on a proper route.

I think I mentioned it earlier, it has become a slippery slope, and somehow nothing seems to halt it in it's tracks. So before I can try reversing the weight gain, I just have to stop it. And knowing myself, it will take some tangible results to get a mindset change rolling.

How much sugar do you get in daily?

And I find it a bit weird that eating schit helps with your IBS... :wtf:

Talk to a doctor/proper nutritionist about healthy diets that help with IBS.

1) 4000 kJ is too little. I am on the tail end of dieting (where it is actually more difficult) and I am on 6500.
2) W.R.T preparation, as I said, with 10 000 kJ to play around with, you can actually fit just about anything into it. So if you just want a peanut butter sandwich for supper go for it.
3) What stuff do you count as easy? Most of the time you can work that into a routine diet. I used to factor in a McDonalds meal in (or part of it at least) when I started. The key thing is to diet in such a way that you don't notice it.
4) The lovely(and horrible) thing about dieting is that you tend to lose more weight the more you weigh. So in your case, you will probably loose 1kg+ a week without much effort.
5) To address the joint pain thing, I would try to minimise the amount of impact your legs have in this instance. That includes walking. This is why it is a vicious cycle.
To get the exercise you need, you should do something that doesn't rely too much on your own weight, like rowing or swimming. If can't do them, then do something easy like wall pushups and vertical pulls.

None at the moment. Before the LCHF, probably only the stuff hidden in food (sauces, spices, etc). Not much of a sweet tooth, would have some juice occasionally, and maybe a chocolate. But definitely not a daily thing, a weekly thing at most.

I have to add that I have gone through a process at some stage to eliminate the foods that doesn't work with my IBS, this had nothing to do with my health, purely just to try and avoid pain. The obviously unhealthy food I have been eating was made with the remainder of the "food list", so that is what I refer to as schit. It doesn't mean it's unhealthy food, maybe healthy food prepared unhealthily. Lots of meat and veg and lots of starch.

Spagetti Bolognaise, Lasagne, Spareribs and Garlic Bread, Chicken Curry with Rice, Roast Chicken and Baked Potatoes, Boerewors Rolls, Braaivleis & Braai broodjies, Mince and Rice, Pork Bangers and Mash Potatoes, Meatballs and Veg, Stews, Pies, Take-Aways

This has been replaced with the likes of:

Steak & Veg, Roast Chicken and Salad, Meatballs and (Healthier) Veg, Chicken Stir Fry with Veg, Freshly prepared Soups, Grilled Fish and Veg, Braaivleis and Salad and so on.

As far as the exercise goes, that sounds like a good idea. If only there were decent gyms close to me which doesn't want to lock you into 24 month contracts at R700 per month.

I am so irritated, I must sound like someone on "my 600-lbs life", but I don't have any mobility problems, it's just if I push myself just outside of my daily run around, the joints suffer.

You can have all of the food you usually enjoy. Baked potatoes(with the skin) for example are quite good for you. Ditto for Chicken curry and such. You just need to sit down on a once off time and figure out how much each portion is worth.

The exercises I recommended (wall push ups and vertical pulls) do not require a gym or a contract. All you need is a wall and a door frame.
Wall-Pushup.jpg
Vertical-Pulls-Convict-Conditioning_thumb.jpg

Start off each one with a set of 10. That is it. But do them properly and do them slowly.
And do them 3 times a week.
Once you feel that you can do them properly do two sets of 25.
Then 3 sets of 50.

Thanks a mil for all the advice. I appreciate it.

I will definitely give this a go. Watch out for another thread when I pull over a wall :p

Have you discussed this with your doc?

I very much doubt this is going to go down well with IBS.
