DVD drive disappeared from My Computer and Device Manager

The best is to go to Edgars and ask for Flux capacitor RAM modules. From there it is simple plug and play, but it will show you on the packaging.

Actually i did just upgrade iTunes. So is there no way to have both my dvd drive and itunes on Windows?

You can re-install iTunes again later from a full installation package.
Don't do the upgrade thingy.

BTW, DVD drives are not the only thing that iTunes screws up.

Ok on a serious note, check under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management , if the drive shows up there, try changing the letter of the alphabet its mapped to

Ok on a serious note...

Um, I was being serious.....

iTunes 8 can cause CD/DVD drives disappear + possible fix

Summary: Following my post earlier about iTunes 8 and possible BSODs under Windows Vista, and Ed Bott's fine forensic analysis of what the iTunes 8 installer is getting up to, I opened up my ZDNet mailbag to find eight emails from readers who claim that iTunes 8 made their CD/DVD drive disappear.

grrr....internet rules say you're only allowed to post bullsht answers & derail the thread *after* the correct solution has been posted. Weak style people...

Older versions of Nero also caused the rom to dissapear from vista. Think Nero 7 & upwards worked. The rom would still show in device manager but would have a exclamation, there is a reg fix that would sort out the atapi drivers.
Your issue might be hardware related if a bios update or chipset driver reinstall doesnt work.

Hi guys thanks for all the help and advice. Itunes seemed to be the main reason why my DVD drive would not work. After uninstalling it, the drive reappeared under My Computer and works relatively normal. Only issue ive noticed is that when i first log on to Windows and open up My Computer the drive does not appear, however as soon as i open the actual dvd tray, the dvd drive appears once again. Quite strange and i am still trying to diagnose the issue. But thanks again for all the advice, much appreciated!

No problem! :)

There is a setting somewhere in control Panel, I think it is under Folder Options to Always show Empty Drives.
