Hi Guys,

Been struggling with this problem for a while on my laptop which runs Windows 8 - The DVD drive just disappeared and i dont know why or how. I've googled this problem and it seems to be quite common. Using the solutions provided on the various sites, especially the one of deleting the upper filters in the registry, they worked but the next time i switched on my laptop the same thing happend, only this time when i go to the registry the upperfilter does not appear there any more. What can i do and what is the cause of this...? Please help, I'm really desperate to get it fixed once and for all.

Thanks!

Who last used your computer? Maybe that person took the drive by mistake?

Why people take the time to respond only to make a sarcastic comment is beyond me.

For me to fix this I had to take my drive off slave and put it as master.

This can also be due to an option to hide unused drivers in Windows 8.

Can this be done with a laptop's dvd drive?

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

No, i havent. But say for instance the drive does show up in My Computer, how would i go about fixing this issue so that it appears in normal Windows?

If it works in safe mode then it could be a driver that is loading or a piece of software loading that is causing the problem.

If it doesnt work in safe mode your best and quickest bet might just be a re install.
Maybe try running CCleaner and get it to clean up the registry first - wouldnt hurt.

I take it you have checked the event log for errors?

Have you recently installed iTunes or Upgraded iTunes?

Uninstall it if you did.... and your DVD drive should come back.

U need to upgrade the ram on the dvd drive, then it will come back

Ok thanks. I have run CCleaner. Hasnt helped. I havent checked the event log though. What type of error should i be on the lookout for?

Actually i did just upgrade iTunes. So is there no way to have both my dvd drive and itunes on Windows?

Any critical error should be looked at.

It might be a glitch in iTunes - you def should be able to access your DVD with it installed. Try removeit and see if it fixes the problem. Then try reinstall it.
