My PC crashed a few months ago (I suspect the main HDD hard drive was faulty) and the problems started after I dropped it by mistake. I've since replaced it with an SSD and after failing to get Windows reinstalled, just downloaded Ubuntu onto it though its now become annoying and I want to go back to Windows.

When I insert a bootable Windows 11 usb, it always shows no drives or when the drives appear, says that windows cannot be loaded onto the drive. How can I fix this issue?

The laptop is an HP I5 bs1xxx

Just use linux mint.

Ubuntu is an African word for "I can't install Debian".

Want to try to migrate back to Windows. The lack of ability to download apps is whats annoying me. Before I ask a professional to help (who could rip me off), I want to see if I can fix it myself.

It's the same as Windows to download Apps.

What apps do you normally use?

Sounds like you may need to load storage drivers during the installation

Here's a video explaining it -

Most likely from the HP site itself

Trying Windows 10. It still lists no drives under "Where do you want to install Windows"

Your storage is probably set to RAID instead of AHCI in the BIOS.

So set the storage from RAID to AHCI in the BIOS, otherwise you will need to download and put the relevant drivers on the installer USB.

EDIT:
Google says RAID/AHCI should be under SATA controller configuration in the BIOS.

Weirdly enough, there isn't an option in the Bios to change this. Do I need to update the bios? I tried to update it via Linux and nothing changed.

From Uncle Google....

New, Working SSD does not appear on Windows 11 re-install ...
If the Windows 11 installer on your HP i5 bs1xx laptop can't find the SSD, it's likely due to the installer not having the correct storage drivers. You'll need to load the appropriate Intel Rapid Storage Technology (IRST) drivers during the installation process.

Here's how to resolve this:

  1. Download the IRST drivers: Go to the HP support website for your specific laptop model and download the Intel RST drivers. You may also find them on the Intel website.
  2. Extract the drivers: Extract the downloaded driver files to a USB drive.
  3. Boot from the USB: Boot your computer from the Windows 11 installation media (USB drive).
  4. Load the drivers: When you reach the screen where the installer can't find the drive, click "Load driver".
  5. Browse to the USB: Navigate to the USB drive and locate the folder containing the extracted IRST drivers. Select the appropriate driver (often an .inf file) and click "Next".
  6. Continue installation: The installer should now detect your SSD, and you can continue with the installation process.
If you are still unable to find the drivers on the HP website or if you continue to have issues, you can also try:
  • Checking BIOS/UEFI settings:
Ensure that RAID is disabled in your BIOS/UEFI settings, as this can sometimes interfere with driver detection (Reddit.

  • Using a different USB port:
Try connecting the USB drive with the drivers to a different USB port on your computer.

  • Contacting HP support:
If you are still encountering problems, reach out to HP support for further assistance.

If you had Linux installed previously the drive is likely formatted to ext4, which Windows will not recognise. Try formatting the drive to ntfs first.
