I would appreciate some help.

I had a Samsung Writemaster (IDE) for about a year and a half. One day I ralised that the drive woudln't read written discs. The drive would eject the disc as if it was empty with the message: Insert a disc - Please insert a disc into drive [letter]

I figured the drive was old and bought a new one - Samsung Writemaster (SATA)

The problem persists. The system read a music CD perfectly. When using a CD/DVD, I can hear the disc reading and see the green light flashing.

I have done the following without success:

[*]Deleted the Upper and Lower files in the registry.
[*]Updated the drivers
[*]Made sure the ATA Channel properties is - Ultra DMA

I am running Windows 7 RC on a IntelXtreme DX48BT.

You could have done that in Device Manager as well, by uninstalling the IDE stuff in there, rebooting your PC. Anyway, I'm clueless thus far.

Which version of XP are you using?

There was a known issue with some earlier versions of XP.

What Writing software are you using and are the discs written on your PC or not?
I haved use Imgburn, Windows and PowerIso. Nothing so far has worked

Ooops, sorry.. just saw that.

I dunno then. Very weird.

Can you try to turn off the Windows 7 burning features completely? Maybe it is blocking something.

Are you trying to burn image files? or regular file / backups. 99% of my effedup discs are from the sessions not closing correctly. Also overburning can cause problems. I would suggest you set down your burn speed as well (full is not always guaranteed to write correctly). I usually burn at half of max speed.

I have had similar issues with my Samsung drive, try firmware updates.

I have tested using burnt images and backups. Whenever burning a disc, I set my speed as slow as possible, normally x2.

BTW - just like to mention that I will not touch a 'bangsome' DVD player, cd/dvd writer with a ten foot barge pole! BenQ all the way followed by LG...

Have you tried to read the disk in another PC?

I have also tested a new LG IDE on this PC with the same persisting problem. It is definately the PC. The first IDE drive is working perfectly in an older machine.

reload windows..... move on to Win7 RTM :) - WHY?

a - You are sure it is not the CD/DVD device, one works fine in another machine.
b - You have used both IDE & Sata, so it is not the cables.
c - You are using a beta operating system...
d - Only other problem could be motherboard...

Does this happen with all discs or just a particular one(s)?
It happens with all written discs, regardless of the application that wrote it, speed or type of disc.

Original - Music discs, game discs and driver CD work though.

What we know is:

You write a disc in machine A (the problematic one) and you cant read it thereafter in said machine. Q - can you read that freshly written disc in another machine? If not then the problem is PC related (MB or OS).

Determine if the disc is readable at all on another machine. I'm gonna throw a guess that it is not. We also know that the original samsung works fine in another machine, as you have indicated. So the problem is not hardware, unless you have a screwy mobo. its easier to reload another version of windows than to strip a whole pc!

The Samsung WriteMasters are awesome. I swear by it. LG =

I try a friamware update tonight, but the current version I have and the latest from Samsung seem to be the same.

Is is possible that my firmware got corrupted?

The new drive should have worked, so I highly doubt it's firmware. What discs are you using btw? Maybe you need a firmware update, depending on the brand of disc you are using to read/write DVDs...
