DVD drive doesn't read burnt CD's/DVD's

The new drive should have worked, so I highly doubt it's firmware. What discs are you using btw? Maybe you need a firmware update, depending on the brand of disc you are using to read/write DVDs...
I have used: TDK DVD-R, TDK DVD-RW, Verbatim DVD+R, Memorex CD-RW

I did the firmware update last night without and joy. Any other suggestions?

What we know is:

You write a disc in machine A (the problematic one) and you cant read it thereafter in said machine. Q - can you read that freshly written disc in another machine? If not then the problem is PC related (MB or OS).

Determine if the disc is readable at all on another machine. I'm gonna throw a guess that it is not. We also know that the original samsung works fine in another machine, as you have indicated. So the problem is not hardware, unless you have a screwy mobo. its easier to reload another version of windows than to strip a whole pc!
Sorry missed that one. I can't write a disc on the problematic machine at all.

I am starting to agree that the problem is probably mobo or os, I just want to make very sure that it is NOT the optical drive, since they are a lot cheaper than motherboards. Does than answer it?

My windoze 7 does the same, but because I am lazy haven't bothered to try and fix it

Weel from what I understand is you have the problem with two drives, not just one... what are the odds? must be system related.
