hey

i wanna rip a DVD and then convert it to xvid/whatever for CD burning. i read a brief tutorial and from what i gleaned it takes an hour or less for the whole process. a friend told me tonight that it takes much longer. i haven't got a DVD-ROM yet so i can't test. btw it's gonna be done with a 16x DVD-ROM and 512mb RAM and an athlon 3200.

can anyone give some input on this?

If your including ripping the DVD onto your HDD then it could take much longer depending on the DVD-ROM / DVD.

One factor is the make of DVD-ROM used. Some DVD-ROM's are limited to a lower read speed where as others are unlimited. Also the quality of the DVD can be an issue. If it has any serious scratches and your program does not ignore them then it can take up to an hour in my experience (doesn't happen often though).

Everything running 100% you should be able to rip a DVD to your HDD in 15-20 minutes. Converting to XviD takes me on average 1 hour 10 minutes for a 1.4 GIG AVI and about an hour for a 700MB file.

Depending on what encoding(converting) you use, it could take very long. Haven't done it because of how long it could take. The only way to find out for sure it too try it, using that tutorial.

Do yerself a favour and look for easy ripping software.

I've been down this path many times a few years back, down sampling from DVD to fit onto CD using various tools, the ones I eventually settled on at the time were :-

Smartripper - to rip the DVD files to HD
DVDx - to convert to Divx

I spent hours initially tweaking the settings as DVDx requires some knowledge.

If you just want to backup DVD movies, you can't go wrong with CloneDVD, coupled with AnyDVD (to remove protection etc.)

There's a wealth of options these days :-

Personally, I don't bother with ripping to DivX anymore, I just clone my DVD's for backup purposes.

:eek:

But, that hasn't been updated for years. It doesn't support any of the newer copy protection schemes :(

How can it still rip DVD's :confused:

cool

@dualmeister,
what software do you use?

doom9.org seemed pretty conclusive...

I used SuperDVDripper back in the day, it rips from DVD to AVI(divX), and you can choose to squeeze it onto a cd, or 2. It takes however long the dvd is ie a 2h movie would take 2h to rip/encode.

I use DVD Shrink. Mega fast. Mega simple. But why store to a CD, when blank DVDs only cost R6? You can backup most DVD's without any loss of quality. Even in cases where compression is needed, the less compression required, the faster it is.

DVD -> DVD
DVD Shrink
If I have problems with the decrypt I use DVD decrypter 1st with various setting changes

DVD -> Xvid
1st DVD decrypter but only rip the main feature
Then run that file through Auto Gordian Knot with the feautures you choose.

I recommend that you go with dvd shrink. You may find that when you 'backup' one of your 'original' dvd's that it wont fit - this is done to prevent piracy. With DVD shrink it allows you to compress the dvd a little before copying it so that it will fit on the disc when you write it. It is also one of the fastest programs that I have found.

And it also allows you to re-author, so you can choose just the main feature and the English 5-ch sound, which can significantly cut down the amount of data needing to be backed-up.

Actually, when I watch DVD's these days, I prefer to watch my backups. No crappy menus and other junk. The DVD goes in and the feature starts playing. Neat.

Do yourself a favour and do a google on DVD Decrypter. Works like a dream, even emulates structure protection. I then use Nero (Ultra Edition) with Vision Express to burn.

Um I used DVD Decrypter since the day it was released, but the developer has been stopped by the big film companies from updating it. Try rip Hitch (Will Smith) and Layer Cake (Daniel Craig) to your HDD with DVD Decrypter and see what happens ;)

Then download DVD Fab Decrypter to do the job.
