Hi people

I am having problems with my DVD skipping a few secs every 10 secs or so. These avi files play perfectly on my laptop and desktop. I have used the usb drive itself at first, which I thought may be a problem, but then burnt them onto disks, but am still experiencing the same problem.

Purchased DVDs work fine...the dvd player is divx certified...

Please help...

It's definitely a faulty device. It seems the on-board divx decoder is shot and thereby causing some sort of lag. I'd take it in for a replacement/repair if it's still under guarantee/warranty.

An avi could be one of many files. Are you sure the codecs are not too HD or something? Perhaps your dvd player is set to divx5 and the file was encoded in divx6? I also know file sizes effect the quality of playback. My friend has a dvd player that will only play the first GB of a movie.

Have you or can you do a firmware uphgrade on your player?

It can't be a codec issue as these devices generally either recognise one and play it or they don't recognise one and all you get is audio. Filesize does affect the quality of the playback but should not result in pausing every 10 seconds. The only impact that file size could potentially have is:
1. It won't play the file at all.
2. It will play a portion of the file and then stop.
3. It will play fine initially and then slowly start losing audio/video sync and eventually start skipping/pausing too badly to actually watch.

Im not sure about the codec issue. I have a really terrible laptop I use for random stuff... sometimes video. However sometimes it cant play the avi because of the codecs and does exactly what you say it does. It stutters and skips. I believe the problem was because that old laptop didnt have the cpu/memory to decode the higher definition avi codecs. Anyways, thats my contribution.

Avinesh, assuming your device didn't require it in the first place, have you tried formatting your flash drive to FAT32?
Not sure if it'll help but it doesn't hurt to try.

@w1z4rd - You make a valid point that I didn't consider. However, in order to verify if it is in fact the problem, Avinesh, have you tried playing smaller, probably normal-encoded files, like series, etc?

hi guys, thanks for the replies. Its a new DVD player, so I can still swop for another. I dont know which codecs were used for the avi files, but did notice, that one movie played well, but on trying to play it again, it started skipping a few seconds here and there....

I dont know about a firmware upgrade as I cant find the firmware details. it s a logik dvd play...

Any ideas on how to check for the firmware or the codecs used, etc....

Depends on the manufacturer but not all provide firmware updates and sometimes don't ever provide updates to DivX (or XviD) decoder. Remember that there are a number of different versions of these codecs so it may depend on the version that was used to encode your files as to whether it will play. May also consider how they were originally encoded: player might do the codec but not at the quality it was encoded. Not to knock Logik but it's definitely not the greatest brand, personally I've found LG one of the best in terms of codec support.

Hi guys...this afternoon I decided to format the memory stick...it was already in fat32 format...but thought I'd give it a shot. I saved a movie and tried to play it. It was unbelievable...the movie played fine...next step was to try the dvd-r disk with 5 movies on it which I recorded last night and didn't work. Guess what...it also played beautifully!!! I don't know what happened, but it looks like it just needed to be switched off for the evening and it worked today...I will try other movies to ensure it is playing fine before the weekend...I will also format my hdd to fat32 to see if it plays...let's hope it does!!!

2 words of advice:

1. Don't format your entire HDD to FAT32, simply make a FAT32 partition. For example, I have a 1Tb drive with a small 20Gb FAT32 partition. It's big enough for a few movies/series at a time. Also, a few DVD players (and I suspect your Logik may be one of them) don't recognise anything bigger than 16Gb anyway, regardless of what file-system you use.

2. Take Spyral's advice and swap it out anyway. Now while it's still under guarantee. You'd rather swap it now than have to wait for them to repair it later. Just go to the retailer and tell them that you have intermittent problems and you want a replacement. They can't argue, really.

Hey Kheiron...thanks for advice...

I will probably leave the memory stick for the movies as I can easily just save them there from the hdd. I have a small hdd - 80gb which I am currently using. I am going to build an htpc, hence I haven't bought the 1tb hdd as yet. I will keep on using the memory stick for movies...not the hdd.

I decided to take Spyrals advice and am going to swop it this week...hope the new one plays fine from the start...

Thanks for all the advice guys...much appreciated!!!

Maybe rather get a seperate media player? Even something small like the apacer Al350, takes any usb input and outputs via hdmi, rgb or rca and is about R600. If you want to watch 1080p or mkv's then something like a medi8r is better.

What you must do is take your stick with you when you go get it swoped and tell them to connect it up you want to test it, if the problem is still there do not buy it could be a dead batch either get a refund or change the brand.

Good luck mate
