apologies if this has been asked previously....

...the rest of my family (lucky them) are going down to the coast, and my sister wants to borrow my dexter and friends box sets. now i don't want give her the originals but was thinking of ripping them to avi format so that she can watch them on the sinotec dvdv player that is divx compatible.

i know how to make back up copies of dvds, however i don't see or feel the need to use 15+ clean dvds for this exercise, i want to put them on a usb of portable hdd if possible

...so my question is basically, which is the best and easiest (and free) dvd to avi to use, i don't care if the avi is high quality, just looking for something that will make std divx or xvid

"format factory" would be another option also
i have and have used format factory, but not for converting dvd to avi...to try this as well

btw, i tested auto gk and it worked pretty well, except leaving the output at autosiz, gives you small screen file the size of a cellpphone screen...lol, testing it again

I've tried various apps but DVDFab worked the best. I always had problems with audio sync and aspect ratios. DVDFab was the best for me with regards to ease of use and end product. Other apps work ok for movies but tend to mess up tv series dvd's. DVDFab lets you select the episodes, codec type and file size. It then rips and converts to whatever format you want in one go.

It also has presets to make it easier. Highly recommended.

magic dvd ripper. that's all i use. it's not free. but still the best i've ever come across.

Currently ripping some dvds to avi using Aiseesoft. Don't think its free though. Got it on Gaotd.
