Actually I'd recommend h.264. If you can suffer the longer encoding time I think it much better bang for your buck. :)

forgive me for sounding stupid but is h.264 a format of divx? im mainly encoding to divx for dvd players that can play divx as well.

h264

Get your hands on a elgato turbo.264

I have an ibook 1.42 GHz and it rips dvd's to H.264 as well as any avi's to 264 without any loss in performance on the ibook. Don't even realise that it's running in the background. It does the formatting for apple tv, ipod touch etc. Great little toy, can only recommend.

turbo 264

Mine does not get hot at all. Just runs in the background not interfering with anything. You can put jobs in the queue and it processes while you surf and do whatever without realising. Great for reformatting avi's to mp4 for a touch or iphone.

I've got better uses for ÂŁ100 but then I have a few machines and at least one is usually idle at any given time :)

It's a really small investment considering that I only have one G4 1,42GHz ibook. This bumps my performance right up for this task up to a new iMac for a 100 EUR. Money well spent as I only use my laptop for internet, itunes and iphoto. It more than serves it's purpose.

So, in the context of the original posting, a user would first have to rip the dvd (to remove any copy protection) before he could use the elgato turbo.264?

Handbrake's one stop shopping sure seems simpler.

no the turbo rips it.

They really need to update their website then :)

They should also get in touch with Macenstein who in their review of the device, and btw dont get me wrong because if I had r1500 burning a hole in my pocket I might consider getting one, says . . .

What codecs/encoding do the ripped movies floating around the ether use? They always seem to achieve much better quality per filesize than I did when I toyed around with this.

I've ripped (and in some cases re-ripped many that I had previously done in xvid) my dvd collection using H.264.
