DVD write slow

-1st time this happen, i have a 18x Samsung DVD _writer; i use to write a 4.5 in about 8min most, last night i write it almost 40min, not normal to me, any1 have suggestions ?
i use Nero / or / Decrip.
But it's usually not as slow ; and 40min to me is a very long time....
(writer is about 3months old, so it's kinda still new , i'd say)!
 
It could be anything from slow access speeds to your harddrive (anti-virus scan?) to a low-quality DVD.

If it happens again then you can start worrying.
 
Some DVD's are not designed to be written to at high speed, you could be using one that has a 2x/4x max write speed?
 
- did anti-virus scan , nothing found.
- the media - i always use it, so it's not the media - max speed = 18x
- burning data, yes data verification selected.

At what speed did it write to disc walvisbay2003? I have a x12 writer but it only writes at x4 and I cannot kick that habit from my writer.The disc speed is x12 or x16, I know than rewrites only write @ x4.
 
Odds are crappy media. Could be bad batch etc.

Dirty lense maybe? I am having same trouble and need to hunt down my own spooks! :D
 
Have you installed any games that use the starforce copy protection system? They screw with your hardware... messed up my laptop DVD writer and it has never been the same.

My drive has never been able to succesfully burn another CD or DVD since I installed Peter Jackson's King Kong with the Starforce Protection. It stopped working the same day I installed that game and has never worked since, even despite a complete system re-format and re-install. I sent the game back to Megarom and wrote them a letter, but they refused to refund me or to acknowledge that the software had damaged my system. They said I had to provide unequivocal "proof" that the drive had worked properly before and would not work after. I responded by telling them that I would never buy another game marketed by megarom. and I have not since then.

The Russian makers of the software have offered a reward of US$10,000 on their website to anyone who is willing to fly to Russia and demonstrate the same event on a PC with a working CD/DVD recorder. If successful they would also pay transport and accommodation.

Is it worth my time to do that? no... not for that amount. It would involved extensive purchasing and testing of equipment to reproduce the event. I believe it could be reproduced judging by the number of complaints they have received and the fact that UbiSoft dropped Starforce so quickly. But who has the time to go and purchase multiple DVD recorders and games to test until you can perfectly reproduce the error.

I think Starforce are hiding behind this instead of admitting or owning the problem. IMO the copy-protection is another insult anyway.... the assumption is... even thought you bought a legit copy of the software, we think you are a pirate and will try to copy it, therefore we will force you to install this malware.... if I had known that beforehand... I would never have installed it. Next time I will read through any license agreements completely beforehand.
 
Windows XP has a nasty habit of dropping down the DMA levels every 6 errors.

Eventually you end up on PIO mode and everything takes forever.

Best bet is to "Uninstall" your DVD writer and Secondary IDE controller (assuming the drive is one the secondary) in device manager, and reboot.

Windows should pick up the DVD writer again and put it back into DMA mode
