Hey there, just curious, what DVD writers is the best, or is it better to ask what make do you use? A friend want to buy a external dvd writer, I said he must buy a LG, cause I never had any problems with it. Then the guy who helped him at the shop told him it is scrap. He reckon Sony is the best. What is your experience?

Maybe a poll mods?

I've been using Samsung for the past few years, no problems yet :)

Though I've had a Sony as well come to think of it, also didn't have problems with it :)

All of them are the same. LG, Sony and Samsung are aimed at the general market and do what they're supposed to. Lite-on I will never go near again because they sound like Boeing 747s when they spin up. Plextor is the best but they're WAY too pricey and I don't think they're even available in SA.

Most of the writers are all actually made at the same factory. Look at the tiny little writing on the top of the DVD drive... you should see the words somewhere "Matsu****a Corporation"... they make 90% of all PC peripherals.

I stay away from the Older Samsung drives but the rest I do not care too much about.

Plextor, Sony and Samsung for me - all my LG's crapped out on me after a while, but not the Sony or Samsung. As feo said, Plextor is the king, but too pricey - they can be obtained from IntelliStor in Midrand, but you need to be a reseller...

Most of them tend to die just after a year. I have noticed comman faults with certain brands, the samsungs tray stops working, LG can't read dvd's etc all just after a year wierd

I've pretty much only used LG's, with a few Asus drives here and there. I haven't had any major problems with them over the years, but I find the noise they make when they spin up to full speed a bit irritating compared to the Asus drives at work.

I haven't worked with any other brands, except a Samsung CD writer from years ago that gave me bad experiences. So I stayed away for good from that brand.

I have used LG drives - and they have died after a year of so.

For me Sony is good - they runs quieter and the build quality seems to be better.

As we speak I have a broken LG drive - waiting swop-out from Supplier.

I've been through three BenQ DVD RW in the last three years. The first one failed after a year, but the amount of DVDs I wrote during that year was quite a lot....... immense even. :)

I only replaced the second one because I wanted to get a SATA DVD RW. My friend is still using it.

So you can give Benq a try, I haven't had any issues.

I had a Samsung once that would randomly eject the tray, even while the disc was reading/spinning...

It once spat out my original Windows 98 CD (which I used for FAT32 formatting purposes, just in case you're wondering) in TWO PIECES! Have you ever tried to break a CD??

I've had a lot of LG drives and never had a problem. Although I still use my Sony DVD-RW which is about 5 years old. It's rock solid & quiet too. When my LG or LiteOn gives me CRC errors, 8 out of 10 times, the Sony will get the data off the disc.

Not to mention it burnt quite a few 8x DVD's at 16x :D
