I have a friend who has a 9600GT with dual DVI-out. He has connected DVI to HDMI on his LCD TV.

It all works great... For a while... Then (seemingly randomly), the TV speakers will give a loud scratchy / crackly noise. It's very loud. The TV volume makes no difference, nor does muting the sound. The only solution is to switch to a different input before switching back, or turning the TV on and off.

The interesting thing is that the DVI-to-HDMI cable doesn't include sound.

Could it be possible that the graphics card is outputting something that the TV is interpreting as audio? And if so, why does it only happen randomly and after quite a while.

Sometimes the noise takes quite a while to first occur (after everything has been freshly switched on for a new day's gaming), but once it occurs the first time, it becomes more frequent (but not necessarily progressively with each occurrence). I thought this might be some kind of heat problem?

Has anyone experienced anything like this, or read any article that may be of help?

I could be wrong but doesnt HDMI support 7.1CH sounds natively?

I know it doesnt solve the problem, but if thats true it could be a driver issue?

How is the sound connected to the LCD TV?

I have my dual DVI PC card connected to my LCD TV via a DVI-to-HDMI adapter cable and have my sound connected to my amp via Toslink (optical cable) - it's not connected to my LCD at all...

I have not experienced any buzzing at all - is anything else connected to the TV? Are the cables quality or no-name?

Seems it's something experienced by quite a few people.

Apparently you get different types of DVI cables, DVI-I, DVI-D etc. so maybe try with one of the other variants of cable and see if the problem is still there.

The sound is not connected to the TV at all... It is running directly off the PC sound card through standalone speakers.

It's not buzzing... It's extremely loud crackling... The kind that suggests a loose connection.

Maybe some interference when the cable gets warm? Try a different cable.

Is the cable connected securely at both ends? What make is the cable/adapter? Is it a straight adapter cable or is it two seperate components - the DVI-adapter and an HDMI cable.
Is there by any chance an inverter nearby the TV or PC?
