Helloooo Howzit all

I have a Dyndns account xxx.dyndns,org

I have entered the name and account/password settings in DDNS place in my router

I have set virtual server FTP port 21 to point @ the IP given by dyndns

When I access the dyndns addy it points to my router and opens my router logon

LOL what gives,

Slowly now, im a medical man not a pc dude

You need to add Port Forwarding to send all connections on port 21 to the internal IP of your machine or where ever your FTP box is. Basically tell the router to send any traffic on port 21 to an interal IP address.

Okay that is expected behavior, you need to forward those web requests to a web server, via port forwarding on your router.

The router is uploading it's IP address 41.X.X.X to the dyndns server and when you request the addy, it is pointing to your router.

Or is there a other reason why you want DynDNS ?

More commonly called Port Forwarding. Router will forward any connection coming in on 'x' port (21) to the ip address specified; the internal ip address of the ftp server.

this is driving me to drink. please help me guys/galz

I will describe the setup and what im trying to achieve:

Dlink DSL2740u 4port rangebooster dsl router

dyndns account

want to achieve:

Viewing CCTV server on pc
FTP file transfers
Remote desktop or VNC

You will have to configure port forwarding for port 21 (FTP) & 80 (HTTP) to the server running the CCTV software or NVR...

Personally I would not forward port 5900 for VNC as it exposes you machine terribly, the same goes for RDP, but that is me.

ok the machine where the "ftp server" software on ip addy is 192.168.1.3

ĂŹf i make virtual server to point port 21 to that IP , what external address would someone use to access the FTP site??

ftp.xxx.dyndns.org from IE would get go there

or from a FTP app like Filezilla you would us the addy as above with port 21 as normal

ok quick breakdown

the 'server" machine must run dyndns update thingy
run ftp server software
point port 21 to the "server machine" local ip i.e 192.168.1.3 as dhcp generated
and bingo?

What about firewall and all **insert michael naicker accent**

The FTP server does not need to do anything, the ADSL router would take care of everything...

The part where you have the router updating DynDNS is 100% correct !!!!

You just have to configure the router to forward requests on port 21 to the FTP server, there is usually a section for DMZ hosts or Port forwarding

!!DV!! could i contact you via email so i can send u screenshots of my route config??

Have a look here not the same model router as yours, but still informative:

http://www.no-ip.com/support/guides/routers/dlink.html

You either use Virtual Server or DMZ not both at the same time.

DMZ will forward all traffic directed to your DSL router to the selected host, only do this if that host is already Internet Hardened, other wise just forward ports as per Virtual Server Setup, which will only forward selected ports. EG 21, 80, 5900, 25, 110

Use www.logmein.com instead of VNC as it is totally secure and doesn't require router config in most cases...

Bear in mind that MS FTP is a bos-up at the best of times.
