Hey guys and girls
I recently bought a Samsung Spinpoint F1 HD103UJ from Kalahari.net. Today I turn on my PC and my BIOS tells me that my S.M.A.R.T status is bad. I then log in to windows 7 and it tells me the same thing. My question is, is this fixable or must I return it for a new one (and if so, how would I go about returning it). I bought it less than 3 weeks ago so it is definitely in warranty.
Many thanks

I bought the same from kalahari - no problems encountered as yet

do some diagnostics - run some disk utilities with SMART testing to confirm that the HDD is on its way out. Once u certain that the drive is kaput then backup your data and ship it back to kalahari.

I bought the same from Kalahari, two of them -- they have been returned and swapped 3 times, so I'm now on my fourth set. If it happens again, I've requested a full refund, and will go back to WD.

Personally, I don't trust these drives, purely because of my problems with them thus far.

+1 for the Samsung diagnostic utility.

I tried it on one of the first drives, and it reported an error - hence the return.
Second batch just made clicking noises.
Third batch - one made a scratching nopise and the other failed within 30 minutes (spindle stopped spinning)
Fourth set - so far so good, but not actually using them, in case they fail - I have them on 24/7 without any power management, and write/delete dummy data to them every day.

I think I'll be getting me some WD's for "actual" data storage!

Don't disable smart. Its like a coma patient unplugging their life support system because it has an irritating beep. SMART failures are generally always bad, and usually unfixable; SMART detects hard errors that a software tool cannot fix. Backup now and then ask for a replacement....
