Hey all. This is to follow up on the post made here : http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=34876

for all to share their more recent ideas/solutions for any kind of Dynamic DNS service that will work on Local Only/Softcapped accounts currently. Im not the most clued up person their is regarding this but id like you all to comment on if it can be done if, say, one had no international cap to speak of? Is the issue of updating the DNS server still a holdback? Etc.

EDIT: I originally posted that I would ask around to see what the various ISP's do regarding this issue.

I sent emails to: SAINet, WebAfrica, OpenWeb, TelkomSA, Axxess, X-DSL; and I filled in GConnect's web-form.

I received responses from (Ignoring the automated "we have received your email" rubbish):
OpenWeb, Web Africa, GConnect, TelkomSA, SAINet, Axxess, X-DSL.

Surprisingly, SAINet actually called me to sort this out.
Surprisingly, X-DSL actually called me to sort this out as well.

Here are their answers:

Openweb:
- Happens Automatically when you log-in to your ADSL.
- Yes, this address is available internationally, if you're on a local-only account, international people will still get your IP Address, but will not be able to connect.
- [username].dns.openweb.co.za

Web Africa:
- Please try using 'smtp.saix.net' as the outgoing server as you should be able to relay via this SMTP server if connected via an ADSL connection.
- FAIL. I replied asking for a review of my question.

GConnect:
- GConnect does not support this type of service, and indicated that using a service like Dynamic DNS would be complicated by their double-authentication process, but, would still work once the double-authentication had been done.

TelkomSA:
- Kindly note unfortunately Telkom does not provide such a service.

SAINet:
- Called me direct, and informed me that they have a service that goes by the name of Fixed Domain Account (F.D.A.).
- Now, this service associates your login account with any domain-name prefix of your choosing.
- You have to actually phone SAINet and request the service, but, you can also choose any front-part of the domain-name available to associate with your account.
- When you have been offline for a long time (More than 20 minutes), the re-allocation of this FDA can take 5 - 10 minutes.
- Works internationally like OpenWeb's.
- [yourchoice].sainetdsl.co.za

Axxess:
- Use the control panel provided on their web-site.
- Enable VIP Lock to lock your ADSL user account to the port Telkom assigned you.
- Find the VIPDNS section in that control panel.
- Assign your own name to use for DNS.
- [yourchoice].axxessvpn.co.za

X-DSL:
- When you create your account with X-DSL, you are automatically assigned a username.
- This username is then used as your domain name.
- [systemgeneratedusername].xdsl.co.za

Conclusion:
The ISP's SAINet, OpenWeb, Axxess, X-DSL support a service that can be used to locate your computer on the internet when you are using a local-only product.

I will update this post if WebAfrica catch - up.
I will also update this post if other ISP's want to add their details.

Some ISPs offer this as a service now. Who is yours?

LoL im trying out the 30Gb local from Openweb... i had high hopes that they would have a DNS but *unfortunately* after a couple of phonecalls i still havent gotten through to anyone. =] Hoping they do have one tho.

They do on some accounts. If you have an @openweb.co.za account then you're good to go if its @dsl512.isdsl.net you're SOL. However DynDNS does often work on a internationally capped IS account.

EDIT - if your isp account is [email protected] then the auto dns will be username.dns.openweb.co.za

Awesome thx alot - lucky enough mine does end with openweb.co.za. So how would one use this and where exatcly does one set it up (if needed to in the first place)? This might sound terribly stupid but bare with me, im just making sure : Anyone also using a Local Only account can, if for example my username = 12345 punch in 12345.dns.openweb.co.za and reach my pc?

You basically just need to set up your router to make sure the correct ports are forwarded to the correct machine and then you use the address provided. If you have any international available and you need assistance with your particular router you can usually find good information here - http://www.portforward.com/

Otherwise someone here is bound to have the same router as you.

Thanx alot. Had a look on the website and got my router in the list, unfortunately all the support that is provided for it are for random programs and not specifically setting up the router for DNS. I have a Dlink DSLG604T. Anyone on that has set up local DNS with the same router please advice....over :D:D

Almost.

It's one of 2 possibulities:
1 - All other openweb users (using the openweb DNS) can get your ip address by typing in 12345.dns.openweb.co.za.

2 - All other people on the internet, using any DNS service, can get your ip address by typing in 12345.dns.openweb.co.za.

It all depends on if the ISP is doing just a local update or a proper top level Dynamic-DNS style update.

Gimme your openweb username via PM and i'll test it for you, I'm mostly on SAINET's network during the day, or ..
Search for an Online Ping tool and use it to ping 12345.dns.openweb.co.za.

dyndns.org works on local only (Axxess at least), I discovered that quite by accident the other day!

Are u sure? There isnt mayb some free international in that account of yours? Would be quite nice seeing my router wants to go there or No-IP by default in the DDNS window.

On IS accounts it often will but a SAIX account is usually well restricted once capped. Which does Axxess use?
 
Yup, axxess local-only also allows users who play games like battlefield 2 and COD 4 access to the internationally hosted authentication servers so that they can log-in before they play.

Unfortunately, axxess does not know how to make this AWESOME fact available to the public.

What for us users who use Telkom ADSL? What do we do?
 
I would suggest just phoning up Telkom and asking them
1)If you are on their DNS service (they will prbly ask for ur username 2 confirm) 2)What your -new- address is (the one other users have to type to reach you via this DNS)
3)What is the IP's of the Default and Secondary DNS to check uve got it right (or just put on Auto Assign - oh and make sure ur router is set up to auto pickup on DNS' as well)
 
Woot thx alot for the info Dave - every step is one closer to a completely informed choice of ISP for a effortless connectivity. Sigh... what a mission.... :D:D

Although im glad that Openweb supports this feature and that its sommer automatically done but why, i wonder, would one be able to resolve but not connect to a pc from the outside :confused:

It's because LOCAL-ONLY is not accessible to non-locals. :D

or

what do you mean?
 
Local-Only means South African network only.

Others, who are not within the South African network, trying to access resources inside that South African only network are actively blocked.

I wonder if Neotel is inside this South African network ... and ... if they are ... for how long before SAIX closes the door on them.
