Hi All

Any advice/thoughts/comments etc on Dynamic DNS services.

What is available, who are the best etc?

Depends on what you want too use it for.
If you just want to be able to get hold of your PC for personal use, then www.GotDNS.org is easy peasy and their free offerings will suit you fine.
You can setup a domain like MyNameHere.GotDns.Org in like 15 minutes.
They are international, and capped users will have difficulty getting the domain name quickly.

If you want to host a proper site, then that domain name is just not going to cut it, and you will have to register a .com or a .net or a .org and then DynDNS that domain, and then you;ll have to pay like $10 a year or something.

These services work fine after you've played with them for like 2 hours, and understand how they work.

If you want to DnyDNS a .co.za domain name, then, well - I don't know of a DynDNS provider that does it.

i use dyndns and noip and they both work great, noip is real easy to use!

there's dddns.co.za (I think it was that), but it's not quite the same thing.

I personally use dyndns.org, and I'm very happy with it -- but then again, I've never been capped.

DynDNS hosts .co.za and .nom.za's for me without a problem. They won't register the domain for you, though, you have to manage that yourself. I have been with them for a while now, and their support people have always been quick to answer questions and resolve problems.

I use DynDNS as well - host a co.za domain with a linux server. Server runs web sites, email etc. No problems. I paid for the domain, so I have my own domain, rather than [email protected]

I also use freedns (http://freedns.afraid.org) for my other domains - costs zilch and you can use any domain - however, if you do not pay, they become part of a pool (so, some w@nker can take p0rn.moederloos.co.za from you and use it without your permission). Works great though, and has some nice scripts to update as well, which you can automate. On that subject, if you run windows you must download "cron" - makes windows slightly more bareable!
