VAT on electricity

Another point in comparing our energy costs to other countries:

VAT on gas and electricity in the UK is charged at a reduced rate of 5%.

In SA, the government takes a full 14% on our bill. They make money from the Eskom price hikes.

+1.

We are being raped on the basics. This will not effect the upper-middel to upper class as much but the people trying to move from lower to middel class.

Also these price hikes will chase away investors as well as "kill" the middle class, which imo is the heart beat of SA atm.

Thats probably why they don't mind eskom hiking their prices because eskom hike = increased money from our 14% that the gvt tax us

But the problem is that the Government does not pay Eskom. They use the money we pay for Eskom and Eskom has to write of the debt. So Eskom hikes the tariffs again to get the money from the municipalities that does not default on their accounts.

35% of power in this country is stolen!!!! And the criminal does not even hide his face on national TV. Smiles lekker and tell the world when Eskom cuts the power he turns it back on for the people.

Yes people again it was shown that crime does pay.

Pay off debt over time? Eskom currently has a debt of just over R50b. A single new power station costs in the region of R200b..... you really don't want to see that debt grow. Eskom is using most of the price increases now to pay off the R50b and the rest to put into the power stations.
That's how you run a business. How many competitive businesses fund their debt and expansion by increasing their prices by 5x? The problem here is that Eskom is being run by incompetents and thieves, and they have a lock on supply. This is a common problem with these sort of basic services. If you don't like their prices you can't switch to another supplier.

The members of government supporting these price increases should be taken out into the street and shot.

It seems to me they're doing a good job of making South Africa's overpriced gas actually competitive with electricity.

Hey guys, my last bill (Jhb muncipality) worked out to 1290kW.h consumed with a total cost of R991.37... This works out to 77c per kW.h... is my calculation correct and how do others compare...

Erm not to sound snide but have you noticed that Eskom is running amok... Paying the "fat cats" Millions in bonusses and then telling the general public it has no resources.

Also having the cheapest electricity means jack if our hourly wages are not on par with those of the so called electric-expensive countries.

In the UK I payed my own water and electricity and I was a bloody manual labour worker... It did not take up more than 10% of my wages.

Now for a single person the monthly rate will 10-1 be between R800 and R1000 (after all the price hikes)... Could you please show me where a manual labourer earns R8000 to R10000?

The estimated monthly electricity bill for a small, middle class family(3-4 people) is estimated to be R3200 (IIRC). Do you really think the average parent earns R16 000 a month?

Please can you give me the break down as to how you get a family of 3-4 using 3.2k in electricity?

I cannot believe that for one second man.

I'd like to go solar when this 300% increase comes to effect. How much should I prepare to pay for a solar system to support my whole house?

I've never had an electricity bill of more than R150 (2 bedroom simplex and I cook for 2 most days of the week).

Maybe I spend too much time at the office or out having fun to run up enormous electricity bills, but every time I see my statement, the only thing I ever think is "Daaamn, that's cheap."

Meanwhile, the monthly levy on my place has just gone up to R750 a month. Now there's a scandal worth investigating...

This is hardly surprising. Its just more of the same inefficiency and cross subsidizing.

Mr Bobo wants free power and govt even wants to give it to him officially, but I guess Mr Bobo wants a lot of free power. If someone is unemployed, please explain how he can chow so much electricity? Most people there cook with paraffin. So electricity is usually used for lighting, water heating and entertainment (TV, hifi). I would think a poor person won't be having too many lights or TVs running.

These 3x 45% hikes will hurt consumers and businesses. Any idiot can see that. Inflation will follow. We are so ...... .

But that was to be expected.

From the figures I've seen in the past, it looked like we where paying far too little, just paying for immediate general and not for the cost of the actual assets behind it (which where paid for a long time ago). So it is necessary to have increases (how much though, I haven't had the time to work out but I know its steep).

Just to give people even more concerns, remember what happened when the petrol price went up... all the retailers etc. pushed their prices up too. So after Eskom and the municipalities, we'll will definitely see food prices etc. going up... just depends how dependent they're perceived to be on electricity. Manufacturing for sure is going to be a problem. So it will have a knock on effect on inflation (to summarize).

That's because you share the standing charge for the supply entering your complex with the other members. By itself this is a substantial amount.

Because they do not live two in a house or even 5 people. They live 25 in a house.

So they have 25 TVs and 25 bulbs?

Maybe they run 25 baths each night.

Seems to me as these unemployed are not content with the free minimum - remember anyone can declare themselves poor - therefore each adult could get his OWN free electricity.

You'll most likely find that they are employed, and employed in lucrative informal non tax paying business, such as the taxi industry.

We pay 85c per kWh in Pretoria.
Eskom charges the municipalities in the region of 50c per kWh..... the municipality pockets the balance, as each municipality makes it's own prices.
Tshwane (rather, Pretoria FTW) has an outstanding account of R500million for the last month (23Aug-23Sept) that it couldn't pay.

For the average mid-sized house (3-4 people), the last figures I heard was in the region of R70-100k, depending on multiple factors (batteries, etc).

Tshwanetoria pays eskom 33c/kWh.
