E$kom - Carte Blanche Transcript

I've never had an electricity bill of more than R150 (2 bedroom simplex and I cook for 2 most days of the week).

Maybe I spend too much time at the office or out having fun to run up enormous electricity bills, but every time I see my statement, the only thing I ever think is "Daaamn, that's cheap."

Meanwhile, the monthly levy on my place has just gone up to R750 a month. Now there's a scandal worth investigating...
Erm, you do realise that the places that you go out to will have to charge you more to cover their electricity increases. It's all connected.

What I don't understand is that SA has a lot of coal & natural gas, yet we still don't have dedicated gas pipes to our homes. Gas is cheap to produce and the appliances (geysers, stoves, heaters etc) are far more efficient than the electric ones.

So they have 25 TVs and 25 bulbs?

Maybe they run 25 baths each night.

Seems to me as these unemployed are not content with the free minimum - remember anyone can declare themselves poor - therefore each adult could get his OWN free electricity.

And imagine all the two bar heaters they burn in winter to heat up the place.

Joburg has a gas company - most of hillbrow/berea has gas to apartments... maybe the kugels just don't want it.

Why did I not know about this? Might it be that the infrastructure is not there?

The co. is called Egoli Gas and here's some info - not sure if it's current,
What paperwork do I need for the installation of a gas supply?

ONCE a quotation for the gas service has been agreed with Egoli Gas, the owner or resident of the home must complete an agreement at Egoli Gas offices, 1 Annet Road, Cottesloe, Auckland Park, and pay a deposit and connection fee. Payment of quotations for additions or alterations to a gas service can be made at Egoli Gas.

What are the requirements for the installation of a meter?

The gas facility must border directly onto the street.

Egoli Gas must have easy access to the meter, both for meter readings and in the event of an emergency.
The meter housing must be supplied by the customer's appointed gas contractor, in accordance with Egoli Gas requirements. Clearance of approximately 150mm should be allowed for working space.

The meter must be at least two metres away from any electrical substation.

Our neighbours had piped in gas (off a street supply line) in Cape Town - Pinelands area about 10 years ago.

I know because their tree went white and died because of an underground leak.

Not sure if its still being supplied though? As I understood the depot was in Maitland??

TBH, I've heard rumors that Melville also has gas. :p

There are many other places in JHB would also greatly benefit from this. Pity there is no insight to provide gas to all residents in JHB.

CT is a very good candidate as well.

Thanks for the info R13. I've found these sights, for those that would want to inquire about gas:

I've got family in Braamfontein using gas for years now, I love it (especially for cooking, food just tastes better). Piped directly into their building. My cousin in Greenside has gas too, although not piped in, she uses gas cylinders. Works like a dream, she uses it for the geyser, for her stove and for heating throughout the house, had a wonderful winter there.

I was going to install gas for my place in Ferndale... I didn't only because when I moved in I realized the stove was brand new... when it's time to replace it, I'll get gas.

Gas is not necessarly cheaper in the long run ! See on the monthly bill how much they charge you for the maintenance of pipes ! Is more dangerous to use too ! And the price will go up too if the electricity goes up. What you chaps must do (and are already doing in some municipalities) is to pay the money into a 3th party account first and only pay the municipality if they 'play by the rules' :D. Is not only the Eskom prices going wild! The electricity price on its own is not too bad (for now). What is killing you is all this 'extras' monkey charges. And at least some can be cut by employing the above tactic :D

How difficult is it, if your electricity is cut to reconnect it yourself?

Very easy, but if you are caught a criminal docket will be opened by the police. The ones who pay just don't steal like that and the local municipality knows it. The majority who are doing the stealing don't care about rules and laws in the first place :D They couldn't care less about a criminal charge. Just drive to the nearest location if you dare (stay in your vehicle and pull a Leon Schuster). Look for the numerous cables joining the hoender hoke :D
