"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it." ~~~~ Dr. Adrian Rogers, 1931

This really is only a worry to people whose primary concern is personal wealth. Screw 'em. They can share and play nice like the rest of us.

If you are concerned about other peoples wellbeing start a charity and get others who share your concerns to contribute. To force people to be charitable is just evil.

What? So if I want to build a nest egg, or want to leave a legacy for my children/grandchildren I should worry? Why should I give that to your lazy ass because you don't want to work? Wake up man.

Helping one’s fellow man in need, by reaching into one’s own pockets, is a laudable and praiseworthy goal. Doing the same through coercion and reaching into another’s pockets has no redeeming features and is worthy of condemnation. As illustrated in this cartoon.

Or maybe their primary concern is not having society fall over because of lack of incentives.

Uh - yeah, that's the point. It all depends on how you define "incentives".

Currently, I am incentivised by the prospect of a society which is almost entirely middle class. It's really nice. There's not much crime, things get done, there's plenty of time and opportunity to do the things you really love, and - funnily enough - most people have wodges of cash in their wallets anyway... ;-)

Dr. Rogers - "I believe slavery is a much maligned institution; if we had slavery today, we would not have this welfare mess."

Hey grayston I've decide I no longer feel like working. No doubt you won't mind paying for my health care etc while I sit back and relax.

Appreciate it thanks

Alan

grayston, I also want a cut of this pie, how about you support me too. My demands are a bit bigger than Alan's, though. I'm quite a fan of deep sea fishing, so how about a boat and a nice pad on the Moz coast. Throw in a few nubile young ladies and a few kegs, and I'm sorted.

I'll be sure to help keep you warm and healthy and bombarded with potential job opportunities while you sort yourself out.

You may have to move into a smaller house and give up the high life, though. It's the middle-class equivalent of becoming a squatter.

See how much nicer a socialised society is? :D

Socialism and middle class, by Grayston's definition, are just other words for average.

They made a documentary about it. It was called 'Idiocracy'.

Does that mean that any country that uses a system of taxation where you pay a higher rate if you earn more, is doomed? Most countries that I am aware of have social welfare systems. These are funded by taxes. Are they doomed?

I saw Idiocracy, it was pretty funny. It was based in part on a science fiction short story written many years ago, called "The marching morons'.

You only need to look at the UK if you want to see an example of a failing welfare state, where the rich, instead of being rewarded, are punitively taxed, so that millions of lazy people can live off the dole. Why do you think so many professional people leave the UK? (Crippling tax is cited as the chief reason, and the Nanny State the 2nd).

However, when I drive past Kayelitsha and imagine what it must be to live in a tin shack on a day when it is 40 Celsius, I cannot help to think that we all somehow lost the plot somehow.

Capitalism is like as snake that is eating its own tail - it will snuff itself eventually.

Unless the growth exceeds the consumption...
In South Africa, where JZ's wives get 12 mil just for sleeping (occasionally) with the president, and JM Drinks Blue Label and Moët like water while the old people get fruit and water...
I somehow think the attitude in South Africa is more of one fat man saying to another fat man "Eat less" so that he himself can eat more...

Spot on.

Less reward for hard work = less incentive to work hard = less production = less total benefit to SHARE.

See how much nicer a socialised society is? :D
How about you just read this right here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticisms_of_socialism and save us all some time & grief.

When the non-tax payers outweigh the tax payers by a large margin as is the case in South Africa at the moment then yes. There are so many people on government grants it's scary :wtf:
