E-tag, e-toll bill complaints

But that budget for the fuel levy is already allocated to fraud, corruption and other projects that has nothing to do with roads and transport services (Nkandla et al). Therefore there must be think tank teams to explore and make plans how to extort more funds from Joe the middle-class citizen.

Found this interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taxation_in_South_Africa (makes me wonder where those 813 billion Rand go every year).

TBH: The government should really look at raising VAT instead of income taxes to "spread the tax love" to people not paying taxes.

the RAF is a major drain on the economy being funded through the fuel system.

The point is the SANRAL went with tolling because some very expensive consultants told them that the economy would suffer more and revenue optimization would not occur if the pumped up the fuel price. Unfortunately the consultants didn't tell treasury to lay off a whole bunch of useless employees of SA (Inc) at the Cape Town office.

a increase of R1 might pay for all this but will not cover the bribes\extras\fatcats. this etag is fubared

The current fuel levy (not the other levies) is about R2 per litre and nets R40 billion a year. If they increase it by R1, they can pay the GFIP roads off in 1 year, then they can build 185km of GFIP class road every year going on...

Or an Nkandla for every fat cat in parliament.

It is very worrying that even if you try to comply you get nailed. You would think they would be more lenient on someone who is an actual registered etag user. Way to make more people actually want to get registered and tagged in to the system...

Read about the guy who bought the tag, topped up his account and by the 23rd December he was in the read and was not capped and was subsequently handed over to the VPC. He was still savvy in that he pre-paid and did not register with a direct debit or credit card - can not even begin to imagine how they would raid your bank account.

That was in the article wasn't it?

But that is the scary thing, you have to trust they will stick to the R450 limit which does not seem to be the case. If a vehicle of a different class has cloned plates (yours) and goes through a gantry it appears they will not honour the normal charge anyway (see the article on the hire car getting charged while being transported on a flatbed months after they had cancelled its tag).

From all accounts there is no consideration to the consumer and protecting them, rather the burden is being pushed on to the public who by all accounts have no ability to get the required details to solve a problem.

I wonder what the cumulative effect on the Gauteng economy is with all these problems, JB billing crisis, etolls, power problems and so forth.

I don`t support the system at all. But what flabbergasts me is how they are trying to implement this whole thing. My mother got the thing and here are some thoughts.

Some of the things that tick me off about the system\device (excluding everything else mentioned before):

  1. e-tag should have a tiny LCD display showing balance. When passing gantry deduct the cost and update balance.
  2. Or a green\red LED for prepaid to indicate if funds available.
  3. If your a South African citizen it should be treated like a normal utility bill where one receives an invoice monthly with the standard payment terms with 30-60-90-120 notices.

But it was probably designed by some finger in the pie guys and they pay them a huge amount for over priced cheaply designed device, or some middle man taking the cake...

and that right there is the problem with registering - you are then at SANRALS mercy - after all, you agreed to their T&C's.

You are delusional if you think the ANC will spend surplus funds on expansion or actual road maintenance ..
