The only time they will ever look at the number plate is when you contest that you went through the gantry... you cannot possibly tell me that every numberplate/tag is matched in real-time

Does not have to be real-time matching, system can just take the few seconds of video and the etag id dump that into a processing queue then later pick up the match/no-match result. match do the billing, no-match dump the data for manual verification.

The beep that you will hear on the etag is probably only a confirmation that your etag was read, and the id understood, no cross checking if the tag is valid for the vehicle on which it was used in real-time.
