They refuse to divulge these details but once again, we can calculate them. The cost to build the gantries and for the software is around R2.5bn. Therefore the operational costs are around R13bn...
over what period would that be?
They refuse to tell us, but I'm assuming over the duration of the bond repayment, so 24 years. Still, that's just on R50m per month that we as taxpayers are paying for them to erect gantries to recover money from us. The rest of the world paid far, far less, and many simply bought the hardware and created jobs to manage it. Apparently sustainable job creation is not on this government's agenda. Nor is cost-cutting, or investment in infrastructure...
If they don't get used for etolling I suspect they'll most likely become speedtraps.
As average speed-traps go, they'd be the most expensive in history, but if they dedicated a team to recovery, they could recoup the costs in about the same duration of time as e-tolling...

Probably quicker if it promoted a culture of abiding by the law and accident rates dropped...
